I have over 500 Dvds... and I still buy more. Until there is a robust, legal way for me to copy this collection to digital, that can be accessed from a piece of hardware, and can be watched on as many devices as I want, then I will stick with my DVD's.

Just on the off chance though, is there a way of legally backing up DVDs, to, say, a server that I can plug into my TV and keep the resolution that I get from my upscaling DVD player and my 3D Blu-ray player? And keep the high quality surround sound?
There is the Kaleidescape cinema one system that can store up to 600 DVD-quality or 100 Blu-ray and you can buy an additional storage unit for even more space. The down side is the cost, at over £3000 for the basic unit and the same again for more storage, it ain't cheap. You will have to get the ground crew chap to work out how to mount a BMW on the hardpoints on your typhoon to bring it back from Germany. Smuggle one or two in and the profits will pay for it easily.
Fucking hell that's expensive!

I mean, you could build your own server with far more storage capacity for that kind of price. I mean, 100 blu-rays is about 8TB at most, right?

...Have they actually sold any?

With a few exceptions, everything is physical for me. Games, books, movies, although I don't buy music in any way so N/A would apply well. I do not really care about the movies and books being physical or digital,(although I think a bookshelf full of books will never look bad), but games are what I prefer to have as physical copies.

Does it matter much in the end? No, but for the sake of having a great physical collection like I do now, I want games to stay physical as long as possible.

I haven't gone digital with books- I don't have a Kindle and I like having books. I like the smell, I like the feel of books and if I don't have books, what on earth do I do with shelves? I'm not totally against the idea of eBooks though, I can imagine it being useful to take travelling.

With music, most of my purchases are digital, although I do occasionally buy physical copies of things if I'm in HMV and I see them on offer. As much as I like having physical copies, it's not really feasible to have my music collection on disc due to cost, space and practicality (I'm only going to copy the disk onto my laptop anyway).

I don't remember the last time I bought a DVD, so there's that. Most of my game purchases in the last year have been via Steam.

I really do see the pros of going digital but nothing to me beats a good old physical copy these days like a book or a dvd.

That and I downloaded a load of games I bought from the Steam summer sale and now my ISP has begun to throttle my connection even though I pay for unlimited which defeats the point of me even owning anything if I can't access it properly online for what I paid for.

Kind of, it really depends on the type of media whether I like to get it in digital format or not. For videogames I am pretty much all digital now, with the odd exception of buying the odd physical version of a game if it works out cheaper. Since big manuals and that are kind of dead I see not real reason for having physical copies taking up space. As for music I'm pretty much 50/50 on digital as I love having physical cd's but hate waiting for them to be delivered. Thankfully amazon's autorip service gives me the best of both worlds. Books I haven't gone digital at all, I prefer having my books physically on my shelf and since I inly really read books while I'm sitting in my home I don't feel the need for an e-book. I very rarely buy dvd's any more and stick to streaming services like Netflix unless it's a movie or series I really like, then I would still buy a physical copy.

Well it is a blu ray player with upscaling dvd that auto rips, removes all the ads and has a 3Gb database of cover art cast lists for 110,000 DVDs. Its is pricey but it does come under the category of ooooh shiney. The Kaleidescape is cut down version of full multiscreen av commercial system thats comes with 42tb of space in a 4U rack server.

I have all sorts of digital things some purchased, others 'obtained' (yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!), but one thing is constant. All my books are paper. If they were ebooks, I wouldn't feel they were safe. Ebooks csn be changed, deleted from your collection. I don't trust them to be secure from meddling from third parties. It's a bit paranoid, I know, but you can't be too safe these days. Everyone's spying. Also, I've always wanted to fill a room with books.

I'll get rid of my physical books the day hell freezes over, thaws, freezes again, then sends a colony of demons to the moon to escape its unstable weather. I like the feel of books, I like the smell of a new book, I like not looking at a damn screen for a while. If I don't have room for my books, bullshit, I'll find room. I'll sleep on the damn floor with books for pillows if I have to.

I don't own any music. When I listen to music, I pop on youtube. When I'm out, I don't really need to listen to music. I have started using netflix instead of buying dvds because it's cheaper, and I haven't bought a game disc in a while, so I guess partially digital.

The only books I have in digital are ones that aren't in print anymore and I have physical copies of all my movies.

I can't say I trust the reliability of my internet enough to switch over to cloud storage just yet.

I've gone digital for PC games (since a lot of physical copies are literally just an install disc and a Steam/Origin/whatever key anyway) as well as most of my music (I still have CD copies of stuff I really love). I tried going over to digital with books but I have a lot of stuff that just feels more right reading from a physical copy.

Yes, I know that sounds stupid. >.>

Not at all I'm pretty much in the same exact boat as you with most of my PC games being digital while still keeping their physical copies around and nothing to me beats reading a proper physical book for the evening compared to looking at a glaring screened one.
