I know this is inaccurate but every interaction I've had with them has involved them being passive aggressive weirdos with a persecution complex who are desperately insecure and so self congratulate each other wthin their community, constantly trying to get others to see them favourably to fuel their need for approval.
I know some people compare them to Sonic fans, furries and other obsessive fandoms because of how clingy and identifiable they are with the source material. The one thing that I don't get is the route they take. the former fandoms I mentioned usually seem incredibly self absorbed and only interact outside the community when someone calls them out on bullshit, then they all become ridiculously defensive and all continue reassuring each other that they're all okay.
MLP fans on the other hand seem just the same yet take the offensive for some reason. They surround themselves with the show even more extremely then previously mentioned fandoms and seem to just be the same types of people except they need a hugbox. Not to mention the sickeningly pseudo-omnipresent quality it has on the internet. It's like when there is that popular new song or whatever that everyody in school sings, hums and has on your iPod and you're one of the few people who don't like it.
