Skyrim or MW3
Not because either necessarily deserves the title, but because the hype for them is that great.
Remember: "GOTY" is not a title indicative purely of quality, but a title given due to popularity.

Neither game has made my GOTY list this year:
-I'm not playing Skyrim this year, so it's DQ'd by default.
-MW3 is the same overrated tripe it's been for three years running now

The other contenders, well, some of them aren't out yet. We shall see..

Why the hell are MW3 and BF3 grouped together? May as well group Skyrim with Skyward Sword. And where is Dark Souls or Deus Ex HR? All in all this is a pretty shitty poll.

OT: So far my GOTY is Skyrim.

I think skyrim, why even though it is not flawless it is such a huge game with such amount of things that can happen and you can do that. You easily overlook the flaws.

Not to mention the amount of hours you can put in one simple playthrough there you go..

I cannot imagine that anything other than skyrim will even have a chance. I say with complete confidence that Skyrim is the greatest game of the entire decade, trouncing it's competition for GOTY, and I'm far from alone.

Either Arkham City or Saints Row: The Third when it comes out.
Most publications will chose Zelda or Skyrim if I'm right (which I am)

Why... you are a little... pessimistic of the gaming community.

Need I remind you that Heavy Rain won IGN's GOTY a couple years ago..... lol
And who gave it that award?

An award ceremony? The Internet? Your friends? Or perhaps a marketing company who is leveraging strong sales figures?

In the absence of a definitive process or established credible authority on the matter, I can only assume it means "most popular", since the subject is mostly...well, subjective.

AC:R isn't out yet and it's too early to judge Skyrim. Why does this poll need to be now rather than closer to the actual end of the year?
There will be another one in a few days, so worry not.

Skyrim will, of course.

You just sound like a very sad individual.
You would be correct. It's just the way things are.

HOWEVER, I will agree that we need some sort of "Academy Awards" for games... there have been some attempts at it, but there hasn't been anything as cohesive or mature as the actually Academy Awards. This, I think we can agree on (more or less).
Now that I think about it, such an awards authority would take flak for the same reason as the real Academy Awards: "It's pretentious and politically-charged"

(As if giving out awards for subjective achievements wasn't pretentious. It is, but we have fun with it in our own little way, and I guess it does spark some serious discussion due to the controversy certain picks can generate)

Battlefield 3, hopefully. I have the sinking feeling it will be Skyrim, which is the least deserving of the bunch (excluding MW3, which doesn't deserve any awards).

I have no idea what the perimeters for Game of the Year are. If it's based entirely on sales then it will probably be Call of Duty.

As an aside, I like that nobody seems to like Call of Duty, but it still sells millions of copies. I think one or two of you are telling fibs about buying it.

First off, there should be a lot more votes for Arkham City.

Second, where is Saints Row: the Third?

Actually Third, shouldn't we wait a couple months until the hype for these games have died down. I admire you enthusiasm but everyone is drooling over Skyrim right now so any attempts to determine which game is GOTY material is going to be thrown at Skyrim because even though it is a good game,no denying it, but it's new right now and that's all people will be talking about. It's best if we actually wait until early December for us to do this because all of the votes are tainted by Skyrim's release. And no this isn't some fanboy raging at the lack of Arkham votes, this is a guy who thinks on an analytical level and noticing certain factors. So we should we wait a while and try this again in a month.

Finally, why the heck is Portal 2 up there? Wasn't that released exactly one year ago from today? Anybody?

Anyway determining a GOTY winner right now isn't necessarily pointless but we aren't exactly going to get fair votes down the line because of a few new games being released. Let's wait awhile for the new game hype to go down and try this again, okay? Besides, I think we all know what really matters, which is Yahtzee's GOTY. We all know it's gonna be Saints the Third.

I love threads talking about GOTYs as if there is only one Game of the Year award that matters instead of there being a metric boatload that matter relatively little. At some point we really need to develop a single awards program that actually has weight if we want Game of the Year to mean anything, though how we can compare Skyrim and Portal 2 in value is beyond me.
OT:I've only played Portal 2 and I liked it, so I guess that.

CAPTCH:thing'll onrswi. I guess that is one way of looking at life.

It was released in February of 2011. You want a reason we Novembergeddon? That is why. We tend to forget about everything that came out before around September and think it came out last year. See also Witcher II not being on that list. It feels like it already had its bite at the GOTY apple but didn't.

Touche sire, but you must agree with me on the grounds that trying to decide GOTY candidates right now will be most ineffective due to the hype generated by Skyrim's release and that these discussions are best saved for a later date where such hype has died down and the mist of rancor produced by new titles fades allowing for gamers to select the cream of the crop as the chosen GOTY with unmolested eyes.

I'm a massive Zelda fanboy, so Zelda will probably get my GOTY (I'm espescially excited after that extremely positive review from the escapist). Skyrim looks pretty awesome as well, but I am going to wait a bit for the DLC.
