Last year I was a teachers aid in an English class. The teacher was lazy and had me and the other aids grade most of the tests. In most of the tests there were some grey areas in what was right and what was wrong. Usually when someone had an answer that fell into the grey area, I gave the person full credit. There was another aid who looked for any excuse to take points from the person that they were grading. I was wondering how everyone else here would grade.

Well, in English, a lot of answers are subjective. I think you were perfectly justified in giving them full credit. That's something I hate about English class - you can make "what was the mood in this story?" a multiple-choice question.

I'd grade the papers based on what I thought was a perfectly viable aswer. As long as the student is articulate and grasps the subject matter, who cares if he/she has a different interpretation than the "right" answer?

Perception is the key. Sometimes people just ramble on about stuff, and while the paragraph might contain some things that might be right, you know when they're just rambling. And also, sometimes people know the answer, but can't figure out how to say it. I think perceiving that is more important than grading them leniently or harshly.

if the answer's good enough i would give a point.
Unless you can give 0.5 points for that kind of answer

Here you go little Timmy, here's a 0, now remember the lesson I taught you today, life's not fair and you'll be recieving grades that reflect this.

Now that is more of a lesson than any old book could teach.

I would take into consideration the question, and the quality of the answer given. Yes, English is rather subjective, but it is only subjective so long as they provide a reasoned and well thought out defense of their particular viewpoint. Sure, you can have a unique interpretation that differs from everybody else, but if you can't defend that interpretation, then sorry, no marks for you.

Well if its an grammar type English class then I would definitely mark people down for half-ass answers. If it was a more subjective type class then I would allow for just about any sort of argument as long as it was properly backed up in a logical manner.

Well I guess I'm a bit soft but I'd give out half a mark for half-right answers, but only if it looks like they actually tried. If they half-assed it, then sorry but fuck you!

I like to think that I would be lenient in that situation but in all honesty I have no idea.

Assuming you can't give half points?

If the test was generally bad, I'd give the point to them as a confidence boost. If it was generally good, I'd take it from them to show where they can improve themselves.
