I think that they are 60% 40% important beacuse I have played Oblivion on PC with the graphics turned all the way down and it was terible!! well I cant say that the storytelling in Oblivion was ten out of ten but it made the game SUCK!!! so I think that they can be important but not totally imortant.

Well of the 2 i'd say story, but as mentioned above i think gameplay easily trumps bouth. I'd say gameplay makes up 80% of what makes a game good, while thinks like story and graphics only take up like 5%.

Al of the aspects of the game have to work together. I loved crysis, but mainly for the gameplay and the characters (and throwing people through walls). That said most of Crysis' 'rewards' for completing a mission are huge explosions or visual treats which would be ruined if the graphics weren't up to scratch.

why isn't there an option for a little bit of both....? games need good graphics but developers shouldn't spend all their time making it look spectacular at the price of good gameplay....

Graphics never ever make the game, not even for Crysis. It's just a bonus alongside the storyline.

graphics are good for when a game first comes out but after about a year passes, those graphics ain't to pretty anymore. a storyline usually ages well. just pick up an old nintendo 64 or playstation game that had great graphics back then and compare them to what is goo by today's standards. now pick up a game on the same console that had a great storyline and compare it to today's standards.

I never did pay too much attention to graphics... I'm usually too busy slicing monsters in half with bullets to notice. So it either has to be REALLY pretty or they might as well not bother and just improve the story and gameplay.

A strong visual element can make an otherwise average game awesome.

e.g. Okami would be nothing without its graphics.
personally i liked the storyline and gameplay with Okami :3

Edit: To all the people who answered to his thread, i am terribly sorry that i didn't involve more in the poll, i wasn't thinking straight yesterday, i am really sorry. i forgot to put iin a gamelplay tab and both rqually for voting, but regardless of my mistake thank you for all the opinions, it's much appreciated :D, in any case i fixed it up now ^___^

A game comes down to game-play. It needs to be interesting and fluid. Story, if it is a truly excellent Story can compete with poor and repetitive game-play (JRPGs, Dreamfall, Rule of Rose) but these are not very common at all. Graphics cannot really make a game.

That being said, there are caveats. Graphics are a component of game-play (legibility of characters for instance) and graphics can add or take away a lot as far as immersion in and comfort with the game world is concerned. Same goes for story and sound.

Bad graphics can keep a good game from being great. So in any discussion where people say "graphics don't matter" you can ask them why the God of War Art team takes up an entire floor at Sony HQ.

Exactly why is there no gameplay option? This is MADNESS! Seriously though if it was all about story then JRPGs would be on top and if it was all about graphics then FPS' would be the Gods of Gaming but neither are. Thus gameplay is the only sensible option if it isn't fun to play who gives two shits about the rest of it?
Taking it further...

if it was graphics it would be a movie and if it was storyline it would be a book. Gameplay makes it, quite literally, a game.

lets put it this way: Mega Man 9.

it has 8 bit graphics, pretty much no story, and yet its one hell of a lot of fun and challenge, mainly due to the gameplay.

gameplays fun = the games fun

this is only an exception however, so i'd say most games need a good balance of all 3

I say gameplay, but these days, graphical design is important in making the game feel fresh, when most of the fundamental ideas about storyline and gameplay are old ones.

Storytelling can make up for bad gameplay and vice versa.
Both of the above can make up for terrible graphics.

Take LoZ:OoT:
Graphics: Top of the pops anno 1996
Gameplay: defining for all zelda games (and other RTRPGs) to come.
Storytelling: Legendarily epic
By my opinion, the best game released to this day and age.

Agreed that was definitely a better analogy then mine.

I've not read through the whole thread so I may be repeating something here but anyway:

I think it depends on the type of game. I feel that FPS games nowadays need to be more than just shooting lots of pretty, yet gruesome looking enemies until you can build walls out of their body parts. There needs to be great graphics, gameplay and indeed story I feel in that type of game now.

I think a point should be made about video-game movies. Studios get creative licenses and seem to half-heartedly produce a game using it. Two examples of this would be the Bourne Conspiracy and the Quantum of Solace game, fun games in their own right, but for me they're both missing great gameplay and graphics, and seem to be low quality products, I just wish, being given a game to make like one of those two, that they'd take full advantage of it and make it a 9/10 at least.

It really depends on what Im after. The normal choice would be a balance, but Ive played games with bad gameplay only to hear the story and I still enjoy it. I guess graphics comes last (I enjoyed No More Heroes, that says it all), often more important for me is how the graphics are artistically.

In many games the sound is actually a major part for me. For example the SSX series.

I still think (and everybody should) that gameplay is the most important part in a game. Graphics or story don't matter if the gameplay is bad.

I voted for the story by the way.
That doesnt make any sense. Im guessing its because story is the cool thing to pick, since you already said that gameplay was most important?
