As usual, the title says it all. I'm putting up the list of what games I should get, and it's right now one of them in sandbox games.

EDIT: Since most people like SR2, and I've asked some friends around who like GTA and SR, I've come up with an alternative that seems more homocidal and childishly colorful in my manner (like an E rated Mario game with the up-side of actually killing Bowser...with a chainsaw!... Don't take that too seriously) So I've put up new things to vote on (I would've put up San Andreas, but I discovered I can borrow it from someone).

Personally I preferred GTA. The script was infinitely better actually making me care for the characters and I found it a much more mature, adult game. Saints Row is arguably more fun though, to be honest I just found it incredibly peurile for the most part and populated with an assortment of vaguely insulting stereotypes.

You are going to get a lot of people telling you to get Saint's row on the grounds that it is a "wackier" game, which is true. However, this does not make it a better game. I actually preferred the more serious route that GTA4's story took, and if I wanted humour then the radio stations were still hilarious.

So basically, do you want a wacky slapstick action game, or an intelligent crime drama? Honestly I would just get both used.

GTA4

Its more of a mature game which suits me better. The story was intensely engrossing and i felt myself getting attached to certain characters.

The cover system is cool and so is combat in general. I also LOVE the new driving physics.

Saints Row 2

Just seems like one of those games that is just trying to be as outrageous and as 'funny' as possible.

It has the kind of humour and is the kind of game that appeals to 12 - 15 year olds and not the actual market it should be appealing to which is 18+.

If the two games were jokes, GTA4 would be a serious, satirical joke and SR2 would be a poop joke.

Gotta say Saints Row 2. Niko Bellic is just such an unappealing character, and the story from Saints Row 2 is already established.

STORY:
Saints Row 2: You were on Alderman Hughes' boat when Julius, the former leader of the Third Street Saints, blew it up, you survived and were in a coma for two years, you wake up in jail, go bust out and cause mayhem on the streets of Stillwater...again, by blowing up hotels owned by the yakuza and blowing up drug labs owned by jamacians."
Grand Theft Auto 4: "Come to America and do crap for your utterly unlikeable cousin."

COPS:
The cops are generally just mean-spirited traffic barriers, in both games, but...
SR2: ...they're headed up by a former Third Street Saints lieutenant who was really an undercover cop named Troy Bradshaw who immediately catches heat from your gang's actions like stealing money from casinoes, but really he's just trying to do his job.
GTA4: ...that's it. They're really just mean-spirited traffic barriers who keep you from ascending the clock tower with a sniper rifle.

ENEMIES:
The guys you tend to put a lot of holes in are...
SR2: Gang bangers from three distinct gangs: The Ronin, The Sons of Samedi and the Brotherhood, the cops and the security team of the Ultor megacorporation.
GTA4: Random guys who you kill as a means to an end.

LOCATION:
The games take place in...
SR2: Stillwater, a frankly ironic name, but the city is something citizens of Los Angeles would find strikingly familiar.
GTA4: Liberty City, an uninspired second coming into New York City.

I won't bother with weapons, since they all do the same thing (make people dead) so yeah.

My feelings towards sandbox games is that I like them where there is no serious story, just gameplay where you can do whatever you want (mostly). However, I've seen some SR2 gameplay videos, and the game seems to have an awfully bland and gray world. What happened to games where they had stronger colors (nit-picking now, but it matters to me!)? That's why I like old retro games, they're not heading to make the world look realistic, they make it bright and colorful and pure silly fun. Whatever happened to that? Make a sandbox game with that kind of look, and add some psychotic, laughable fun, and I'll buy it faster than you can say this sentence.

I voted SR2 because it has more lasting appeal and the gameplay itself is more fun. However, I think GTA4 is MORE than worth a play through. Just ignore the cell phone.

So yeah, get both.

edit:
Expanding a little. I played GTA4 first, SR2 second. I never touched GTA after I finished it, but the story and presentation is leaps and bounds ahead of any other GTA game. The graphics are amazing, the voiceovers are amazing, the cutscenes are really well done. The game just focused too much on all this and cut too much of the fun sandboxy stuff out. Cell phone & all related friend stuff is boring though, don't even bother.

SR2 is GTA4's endgame. Sandbox is there, missions are repetitive but enjoyable. A lot of the missions just involve mass killing which is what you'd likely be doing if you were just running around being sandboxy. The graphics, cutscenes, radio, and voiceovers aren't by any means bad, they're just not in the same league as GTA4. SR2 is just plain fun.

GTA4

Saints row 2 just feels like the game version of what the guys who do all those meet the spartans and epic movie would make

Well... I haven´t played neither of them but im gonna reward myself with SR2 If my math test goes well. I´ve heard that it was more fun than GTA4, but ofcourse I can´t be sure. I only have pc though and i´ve heard that both of them are way better on consoles.

GTA4 is an extremely well made game but if you're looking for the next gen version of San Andreas, get SR2. GTA 4 has got the looks but SR2 has the fun random activities & rewards.

I clicked SR2 because it felt like a more complete game. Don't get me wrong, GTA4 has a long campaign and everything, but once you're done with that, you don't have all the tons of things you used to have in GTA; and the things you're left with (vigilante, car theft, secret package extermination)don't give you any of the rewards you expect, mostly just money and achievements/trophies.

So if you want an engrossing (and somewhat realistic; when you compare them) crime drama with your sandbox, go with GTA4; if you want zany side missions, customization, and weapons with your sandbox, go with SR2.
