I played it on console(s). It was okay, but the story and "game" were quite boring IMO.
The dicking around-driving through crowds of innocents-parts were the fun.
I could spend hours crashing into signs, pedestrians, fences, busses, pedestrians, houses, bridges, pedestrians etc. Or I'd just started to throw around some nades, untill death. ending up in lampposts and such.

It was okay, but not THAT good I think. I still have the exspansions (LOTD and TBoGT) and I haven't even played the start of the balad. Perhaps I should sell it.
maybe

I have spent probably several hours fooling around on GTA4 on my friends console, but I have never played it's story. It seemed kinda fun but not really good enough for me to actually buy it.

I do always like the beginning we're your kinda the underdog, but as the story develops and you become the greatest mass murderer know to man. It kinda fails

Loved it, played it through twice and will probably do so again at some point. Never saw any problems with a lot of the issues people always seem to raise, such as the driving (seems fine to me, I've seen complaints, not in this thread, raised anywhere from "too realistic" to "too unrealistic" and everything in between.)

The only issues I'd raise would be the constant phone calls - I'm more than up for doing the activities with friends, but on my own time thanks, as well as more variety in the missions. Although they were all unique enough to stand out as memorable on their own, a lot of them did boil down to the same sort of thing, though Gay Tony goes some way to improving on that. But they were still all fun enough in their own right, so I suppose I shan't complain too much.

Finished it two times, but didn't like it as much as the older GTA games. It's a good game, to be sure, but it's just not a good GTA game. I like my GTA crazy and unrealistic, thank you very much.

I completed it and had alot of fun with it. At the time I was even considering replaying it.
It certainly didn't have as many of the fun asides or exploratory elements of San Andreas and MY GOD was Roman annoying.

Ballad of Gay Tony was a better game than vanilla GTAIV, I thought. It was just so over-the-top goofy - you know, what a Grand Theft Auto game SHOULD be.

I played it for maybe five minutes on a friend's console. I didn't really decide whether I liked it or not, all I know is that I didn't play it enough for it to impress me enough to buy it.

I played it from start to finish using nothing but a pistol, most times.
I liked the main character; I hated his cousin. I hated the grey, I hated being forced to do these stupid things for other characters but most of all, I hated driving any car in the game, which is incidentally which I took the taxi most places and skipped past the asshole who insults you all of the time.

A mate of mine has it and thinks its terrible. He let me have a go. I used his brother's save since he'd completed it already and just dicked around... for hours... and hours. My mate now thinks I'm disturbed the way I laugh as I push homeless people down stairs and set off car bombs in the hospital ward :)

Brought it on release, enjoyed it, but unlike previous GTA games, it didn't keep me much beyond storyline/sidemission completion, purely because there was actually nothing to do.

Worst 3D GTA game, easily.

The game it self was nice but just the story seemed a lil too serious compared to San Andreas, but the download The Ballad of Gay Tony was delightful!

the story is just so good
Same, but my first run was a normal, my second was for Liberty City Minute. Through my first play, I was Niko, and I was as fully immersed in the grit, the gloss, the glow of Liberty City.

it's a very well made game, if only the story wasn't so linear, if only it wasn't so serious, all previous GTA games at least had the decency of having fun making wacky sidestories. This one didn't, and if you tell that Ballad of Gay Tony was wacky i'd punch you for not comparing it to previous opus's.

So we hear all the time about GTA4. In this weeks latest Extra Consideration, Yahtzee said "GTA4 was the biggest release of any form of media ever". Pretty big words for a game I've never played! Now, I did play GTA I, II, and III, and thats where my GTA experiences stop. Why? Just not my type of game I suppose. 3 was decent and all but I didn't think it was that special (tho I'll admit at the time it was pretty crazy).

Anyway there's still a ton of media about GTA4. It pops up in seemingly every "gaming culture" article/story.

So what I want to know is, who here has actually sat down on this game for more than 6 hours? And do/did you like it?
Played it lots, and it was good for what it was. I appreciated it but I personally enjoyed 3 and it's subparts better, San Andres in particular.

I played it when it came out and I was very dissappointed- it was a rapid change in direction for a series that had always been about over the top, cartoon satire to gritty realism.
Whilst some people loved that I didnt and found myself getting very bored very quickly.

That doesn't mean what you think it means, unless you played with some kinky mods...

I just ignored every friend and girl in the game and stuck to the main gameplay. GTAIV is full of fripperies that could have been left out of the game, watching TV in a game? Come on. Despite the game being a resource hog and not working at all on Radeon cards on release it is still better than Saints Row 2 on PC. I like the car handling and thougt it was a fun game. As long as you ignored the unnecessary friendship crap.

I've owned it since release, yet haven't played much more than... maybe five hours of it. I loved the previous games in the series, but this one didn't catch me as quickly, and I lost interest. I will eventually play through it, regardless of how annoying the damn phone calls get. I do not want to play darts, or go bowling, dammit!
