I'm considering getting it, it looks like fun. How many expansions and whatnot are there now that I have to pay for to get myself up to speed?
Guild Wars now has four games. Three of them are 'stand-alone' campaigns, meaning you can buy any of them and play them. However, when you get more than one, you CAN combine them if you reach a certain place in the game, at which point a character you started in one campaign can go over to the other campaign.

There is also an expansion pack where as long as you have a lvl20 character, you can access a new area and get new skills, heroes, gameplay elements. It's also the 'bridge' between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.

Stand-Alone Capaigns - Prophecies (also known just as Guild Wars), Factions and Nightfall

Expansion - Eye of the North
Thank you, that certainly cleared things up. So, let's say that I'm intrested in paying as little as possible, but having the most fun aswell as playing on-par with everyone else, what should I be buying?

Or should I just let my wallet cry and get them all?
Nightfall will give you the best gameplay, as it involves 'heroes'. Prophecies has the shallowest learning curve if you're new and Factions provides alliance battles, an added PVP element.

I play Guild wars because it is free to play.

WoW might be a better game (I don't know, never played it) but as far as I am concerned, no matter how much better it might be, it is sure as hell isn't worth paying the equivalent of a brand new game every 2 months to play.

Sure, Guild Wars is free...but, that doesn't make it a good game. As a former avid player of both WoW and GW I can say that WoW is worlds ahead of GW in almost every conceivable way. A lot of people like to jizz all over GW because it's free to play once you purchase it, but keep this in mind: if someone hands you a turd for free, it's still a turd.
The graphics are better in GW than they are in WoW. That is conceivable.

The content is more immersive than it is in WoW; there is an actual story line.

The chances of being exposed to an extremely unintelligent person is far less in GW.

The PvP system in GW is far more balanced than it is in WoW.

The content is still accessible/not boring once you hit the maximum level.

The low level allows casual play, and doesn't unbalance the game.

There are not as many gold-dips in GW that force an extended subscription (Though the game is free anyways.)

And of course: it doesn't cost $180/year + inital purchase to play.

Guild Wars has a lot of ideas that far surpass WoW when you look at it. You can't say that it's better in every conceivable way, but you can say that it's better in your opinion.

Objectively speaking, Guild Wars is a tad superior.

I haven't played since Factions but i would be keen to get back into the game if i could motivate my friends to do the same.

On this proviso I have to ask: Will Guild Wars 2 be a blank slate?
By this I mean will I need to buy all the GW1 expansions in order to have access to the full range of skills and thus be competitive?

Because, to be honest, I don't think I could motivate myself or my friends into buying GW2 if we had to buy the entire GW back catalogue.
No, Guild Wars 2 will be a new game with only prestige type bonuses for seasoned players of the first, I'm talking about the Hall of Heroes, which is part of the Eye of the North Expansion, in it you get to keep a record of your characters achievements such as maxed out titles, prestige armors, any minipets, and a few display only weapons.

The sort of thing to show off about not giving any advantages.

It's not free. You have to pay $ for it.

Also, PvP. That is all.
I've used bold text to signify where you fail. Also, PvP =/= a better overall game. That is all.
Oh no, a WoW fanboy attacked me. What shall I do.

Yes, PvP + good PvE = better game. One you do not have to pay $15 a month to play.
You have all my support.

Guild Wars is a superior game, and there is no question about it. Look at the amount of updates done to the game: it's on its twenty thousandth build or something now. Why? Because the developers fix bugs, exploits and balance issues the second they get a chance and update the game accordingly. WoW = they'll wait until they can change a million things at once and release one of their patches.
The GW quests are so much better. A typical WoW quest is "The spirits are restless, and they need you to bring me 10 squirrel pelts."
A typical GW quest is "Help me! My fiancée has been captured by corsairs!". Then you escort this man to where his fiancée is, but then he turns on you and tries to kill you. You kill him and the corsairs, and the poor girl who had been enslaved tells you to see her father for the reward you were supposed to get. So, a simple "Kill this mob" quest turns into an interesting short story.
Not to mention that the Norn > all WoW races together.

I prefer a different MMO altogether, but I've gone completely off them.
Out of the two, I'd have to go with Guild Wars, less expensive.

I've played both WoW and GW, and I have to admit, I think Guild Wars was better.
Instead of writing a paragraph, I'll just do an easy to read chart.

__________GW - WoW
Story:____X_ - ___
Graphics:_X_ - ___
PvE:________ - _X_
PvP:______X_ - ___
Community:__ - _X_
Endgame:____ - _X_
Price:____X_ - ___

Score:____ 4 - 3

Feel free to argue with me about it (unless you're a fanboy, in which case there's no point), or tell me if you think they should be rated with another category.

Edit: Ok so mabye, it isnt so easy to read, oh well.

Except PvP in GW is terrible, unbalanced, and not fun...
Otherwise, I semi-agree.

The graphics? Different story. They're different KINDS. GW seems to be a bit more realistic (see: their greenery) while WoW's is more comical/cartoony. Doesn't make one better than the other, just makes them different. (Which... can actually be said about this entire debate).

Assuming the that WoW costing $15 more per month to play isn't a factor, WoW easily beats out Guild Wars, in my opinion.

That said, $15 a month is a factor for some people...

what i dont get in many 'my game is better than yours' on pc, graphics is surely better based on personal opinion and how powerful your pc build is and in my opinion shouldnt be used as a point. and as i have only played wow im not at liberty to give an opinion on which is better.

I prefer World of Warcraft - I own and have played both and I just find Guild Wars to be really forgettable.
WoW may have that pesky fee, but it's justified in that I actually spend a hell of a lot of time on the game. And Iiiiii luvvit.

GW2 can be played as a blank slate yes. However, The eye of the north has a function that allows you to "save" your character name for GW2.

Guild Wars is the MMO that's not really an MMO. It eliminates some of the bad aspects of MMO's, and still has a good pvp system and a large world to explore and things to do that'll keep you loggin in. It also is rare in that it's an MMO with a coherent central story told through missions, and you can BEAT THE GAME. You kill a last boss, get a celebration, congratulations you won, you finished the story, here's some fireworks.

MMO's with monthly fees have a vested interest in rope a doping you along, never finishing the story to keep you paying and grinding.

Guild Wars also nullifies the pains of spawn camping for quests, griefing via open world pvp/corpse camping, it's death penalty is reversable without forcing you to grind gold, swift traveling doesn't force you to go afk during a boring ride/flight from area to area, and forced grinding is kept to a minimum thanks to low level cap (there is optional grinding for titles/faction points, gold for better LOOKING gear, etc if you want to do it).

It really is a genius game. Now, why aren't we all still playing it around the clock like other MMO's? Because like I said earlier, you can beat it. When you beat a game, there's some closure, it's satisfying, and you can retire it until you feel like replaying it. MMO's never give you that, you just keep playing and playing and they keep stringing you along to wring $15 a month out of your credit card.

A single player game, or console game or Guild Wars is like a movie, you buy it, you watch it, see a story from start to finish, finish the movie, and you don't replay the movie every single day, that movie was a good movie but you finished it. We are now free to watch a different movie. MMO's like WoW are more like a soap opera. Day to day drama, that never ends.. if you're LUCKY enough to have a central, coherent storyline (which WoW pretty much lacks, it's more of a clusterfuck than anything), it never ends, because the devs have reason NOT to have it end, to keep you playing and paying.

I've logged in a 1000 hours into GW, I'm not a hardcore player anymore, but I found it so much better than WoW in many ways,PvP being just one.

Rather than being a fanboy to either game,I'm going to say that both games have their good sides, but how much do you play for WoW a year? 60?90?120? You could buy every Guild Wars game for that including a Special Edition or two.

Well let's look at it this way.

I played WoW for about a year and a half, then cancelled for a year, then picked it up for another 6 months. I bought the game and 1 expansion:

I logged probably close to 3000 hours into it in that time period.

For that 3000 hours I paid: $90+($77.94*4) = almost $402.. and I actually didn't do 6 month subscriptions at first, I did 3 month subscriptions for the first year and a half, so it was actually more.

I also can't play it anymore unless I buy another expansion and pay for another subscription.

Guild Wars I played for about 6 months before I got started playing WoW (due to an irl friend), and still played it while playing WoW, and still log in now and then, even after having beaten it a few times all 3 campaigns + expansion and beaten a few single campaigns on other characters. I have about 2200 hours logged into Guild Wars. I paid ($50*3)+$35+($10*4) = $225.. that extra charges was buying a few extra characters so that I could make a primary character of every class, along with a couple slots for dedicated PVP only characters that I also use as mules.

I can also log in and play right now at no extra charge.

BTW if you're interested, right now on Amazon.com you can buy all the retail Guild Wars content for $47.00 + s&h. Promotion until April 22nd.. buy the Guild Wars Trilogy box, get Eye of the North (the expansion) for a free bonus.

Good deal I'd say, then you can REALLY treat it like a console game, beat it (and it's basically 3 games in 1 anyway, so it was even worth the $50 I paid for each campaign) and put it away if you want, it's definately worth the bargain price.

Another more welcoming feature of Guild Wars is the fact that the general community is helpful and friendly, for example the day I started I joined a newly starting guild, we helped each other along with bits and pieces, helped new members with bits and pieces and now I'm right hand man to the guild leader, in a not overly successful guild as far as Pvp goes, but we have fun which is what games should be about is it not?

On the other hand, the couple of months I played Wow I can't remember a day going by without some level 70 on his glowing steed breathing down my elvish neck going, "snarf snarf look at the nooblet killing things for exp snarf snarf" and every time you ask someone for tips on something they just laugh at you.

And no, I wasn't a noob, I understood all the aspects of the game, I was starting off like everyone else, and excuse me for not having instant knowledge for every minor detail on how things are done.

I honestly found WoW to be a pretty standard MMORPG. The storyline was hard to follow, there was virtually nothing in the way of skill managemanet (basically load any given number of skills and hope some work) and It had ALL been done before. GW on the other hand had a pretty well devised storyline (the exception perhaps being the prophicies campeign) Rather good skill management (the set of only 8 makes one think, which is one reason i like it, its a challenge) and alot of cool little elements that i'd never seen before (namely that it WASNT open-world with open-world-pvp)
