Yeah yeah, i'm a moron, noob, whatever.

I was looking at half life 2 on amazon and i noticed that they mention half life 2, half life 2 episode one, and half life 2 episode 2.

Are the half life 2 episodes basically half life 3, sequels to the regualar Half Life 2? or am i misunder standing this and their version of half life 2 CONTAINS episode one and episode two.

Half Life 2 has two episodes. Half Life 2, episode one and two are all seperate games.
Half Life 3 does NOT exist.

Just continuation of the story.
Thank you. I've never played half life 2, and it struck me as odd. I had originally assumed that half-life 2 was episodic from the start and was the sequel to half life one.

The Half Life 2 episodes would in theory count as Half Life 3 (shouldn't Half Life 2 have been Episode one at the same time? Naming a seperate section of the game 'Episode one' doesn't make sense to me) however, the fans will probably disagree since the story, characters and setting is the same.

There will be a Half Life 3 (and it's episodes), mark my works (it too will probably be blown wildly out of proportion).

While their name does bring a little confusion, Episodes 1 and 2 are still parts of the game Half Life 2. Half Life 3 is yet to come into existence.

Compare Half-Life 1 and 2. They are very, very different games. You didn't need to play HL1 to get into HL2. On the other hand, the episodes are just a continuation of Half-Life 2, not another game by themselves.

The episodes are cheap add-ons to make up for the shit ending
Agreed. And at the rate they're going, they might as well have just released them together as HL3.

By the way, your avatar's awesome.

There the contuniueing story of Gordon Freemnan. They are not sequels but rather add ons. I would suggest getting the Orange Box (If you own an Xbox since I'm sure you can download them seperatly on steam.) Since it contains both copies along with Portal Tf2 and Half Life 2.

Actually the episodes are apparently a trilogy (Valve of course will release the last game when hell freezes over as usual) and I think they're supposed to be sort of like a half life 3 but not really.

I don't think they are seperate games since they use the same (almost) engine for graphics and physics. The story is just a continuation of Half Life 2, and the same characters return. However I think I remember reading that if valve were to release the episodes today they would call them "Half Life 3: Episode One" etc.

No they aren't. VALVe was already past the deadline and fans were getting jumpy, large posibility that I am wrong but I'd guess they were stuck at the ending and decided to end it with the Gman and pick it up along the line. Still waiting for ep.3 then VALVe will (possibly) be passing the torch to gearbox, who handled the expansions like Opposing Offensive and Blue Shift, in which Gabe Newell (or someone) said that episode 4 will be a different storyline and setting, Adrian Shepard fans think Shepard will be the character THEN HL3. Best check the wikia for more solid information or somewhere.

Episodes 1, 2, and the future 3 are just like expansions of the game. Think of them as Half-Life 2.5 or something along those lines.

I <3 episode 2. Need to replay that very soon. Hope you enjoy your venture into Half Life!

Your questions been answered, I predict the rest of this topic will be bitching about how Episode 3 is taking its sweet Valve time.

I'm pretty sure either Gabe or Robin said that the HL2 Eps were effectively HL3. I also remember them saying a better idea would have been to name them HL3 Ep 1 etc.

I don't however have a source, and ATM can't be stuffed looking it up, as it is 4am here.

It goes:
Half Life 1
Half Life 2
Half Life 2 Episode 1
Half Life 2 Episode 2

Basically they wanted to release smaller chunks, for cheaper, more frequently.

Hey, they got the first two, didn't they?
