I recently bought Portal: Still Alive on Xbox live, and It was fantastic.

I want to now try the half life games, I am currently broke but could save up the money. I dont want to spend my hard-earned on something I dont play or I dont like.

So what should I do?

Well, you could pick up the Orange Box used, for pretty cheap. And... idk the best place to get the original Half Life.

You'll have to wait for someone else to answer that.

I would say buy the orange box, which contains half life 2, episode 1, and episode 2. it also contains portal (Which I suppose you don't need but whatever) and Team Fortress 2.

EDIT: Also I don't think the original Half Life was sold on the Xbox.

Well.. I'd say get both.

Half-Life 2 is alot easier then the first one and does ofcourse have better graphics since the first one is older.

But I consider both of them pretty good, I havn't played through the first one yet tho(Keep geting stuck on puzzles and shazzles).

Orange Box is your best bet as that's always been cheaper (It started out at $50 when it came out on the 360!) and it's quite fun. You may eventually see yourself move the a PC for playing Valve games like I did, too.

I'd too have to recommend the Orange Box. You should be able to find one of them in game stores.

I think people will most likely agree with me in saying that Half-Life is definitely more at home on a PC. However I played a bit of The Orange Box on the 360 and the Half-Life games were decent enough, although to be honest I'm not a massive Half-Life fan so its probably best if you took my opinion with a pinch of salt.

Also, and I may regret saying this, but I don't know why Portal gets all the praise it recieves. Sure its a good puzzle game and all, but I fail to see why it is so highly regarded.

You can pick up the HL1 Anthology (Half Life, Opposing Forces, Blue Shift) for $15 US on steam. Given that the game is 10 years old, you should have no problem running it on a non-gaming PC.

However, if you liked Portal, get the Orange Box ($20 US) and play it first. Then if you still want to, take the plunge into HL1.

If you play any of the Half-Life-games and expect fifteen hours of Portal-goodness, then prepared to be massively let down... Because they suck.

If you must play one of them, then go with the second one (don't buy the expansions). Playing the first one is torture... It hasn't aged well, and it was torture back when it was released too so... Yeah.

Portal is nothing like half-life. Dont get half life 1 or 2 because you like portal look into them as seprate games from portal. Personally i dont like half life but with the hint of the portal gun finding itself into the restiance's hands i might be intrieged to get it.

Half-Life 1 is pretty dated right now, but still good. If you have only so much money to spend, though, I suggest you get 2. Why? Because it kicks bum. You'll have to pay close attention and perhaps do some research on the interwebzzzz to understand what kind of shit is actually going down though.

you where 6 when the first one came out, ofcause it was torture for a 6 year old, i was 8 and i thought it was scary and hard, but i do agree on getting the second and not expecting a "portal" level of fun, but get the orange box, maybe just burn true the episodes, and even if you dont like it (it can be boring at some times) theres still TF2.

Try adding more weight to the other side of the seesaw.

I like Half-Life and it's expansions more than Half-Life 2. But they are both great.
