Poll: Handhelds

I've been thinking about getting a handheld gaming device for a while, but I've never really been sure about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each device. I'm not sure what the best handheld games are, or which handhelds are the most versatile or simply the most enjoyable to play. That's why I thought I'd ask you, my lovely Escapists, and see what my more experienced and informed comrades have to say on the matter.

I guess what I really want to know is a) is it worth getting a handheld device in the first place? b) Which one do you recommend? c) Why do you recommend that over the others? (eg it has the best games available for it, or because it's cheaper or more fun to play or whatever reason) or d) Should I just hold out until the next generation of handhelds become available?

I only own a gameboy advanced SP. Really though I dont play games on the go all that much which is why I havent upgraded or play it all that often.

Not a huge fan, i like gameboy advance, i play my crystal, yellow, ruby and silver, when i get that pokemon feeling. good enough for me.

I've got a DS which I normally play most, but I'm doing a Nuzlocke Challenge with Pokémon Yellow right now and the DS refuses to acknowledge the cart's existence, so old skool gameboy.

Admittedly it's my SP, but only becuase it has a backlight. I tried using my Gameboy Colour, and I can't believe I used to play games on screens that weren't illuminated.

Oh boy, how I miss my SP though ;_; It was a Mario 'limited' edition one, packed with the Mario puzzler platformer thing. I played it 'til the battery ran out, and we still inside the mall I'd bought it from.. I most certainly threw a tantrum.

You just brought on a wave of bad nostalgia Sitting in the car on long journies, using the street lamps we pass by to catch glimpses of the tall grass, desperately trying to remember where it was so as to not run into a fucking ratata.

I have a gameboy advanced that's on it's last legs but still works. SHame I've lost almost all games for it. I think I still have pokemon blue somewhere, I lost Gold though which I'm gutted about. I poured over 500 hours into that easily. That was the only hand held I ever used. I tried a DS but I didn't like the touch screens. I'm just a bit too clumsy, even for them.

Ever since i gotten my acekard for my DS i have been playing it a LOT lately, ive been playing Castlevania DOS, Chibi robo Park Patrol, the two zelda games, Pokemon Pearl, Dementium, Truama Center under the knife, and Professor Layton and the curious village. ive probably, been playing these games more than i have played my console games in the past month.

pick which one that has most of the games you want, I like Phantas Star Portable and Monster hunter so I play a PSP, but I use a DS for pokemon.

like the psp better though.

I have far too many handhelds, about 9 in total. But I mainly play the DSi just for levelling Pokemon, right now this Mew is Lv. 50.

EDIT : Just booted up the PSP and forgot I had this wallpaper. Awesome

As I own both a DS and PSP, whichever I play most depends on the games that are released at any given time. Currently I'm almost exclusively playing my PSP (Kindom Hearts BBS and Valkyria Chronicles 2) while the current offerings on DS aren't to my tastes, so it's gathering dust.
