Do you need happy endings to make a good movie? This was an argument that I was having with my friend.

I enjoyed both:
The Mist and Paranormal Activity
despite their endings. In fact I may have enjoyed them more due to their ending.

So I wanted to see what everyone else thought about happy endings.

Also:[HEADING=2]Spoilers![/HEADING]

EDIT: Poll seems to be broken as it is suppose to read: Yes, No, Depends of the type of movie. If a mod could change it, that would be great because I can't.

EDIT:EDIT: The poll doen't even seem to be registering the correct click so just ignore it!

No, I don't need happy endings to enjoy a movie. The Mist was an awesome even, and it wouldn't have been the same with a happy ending.

There's always room for a happy ending... oh, wait... That kind of happy ending.

So long as it's not asinine... I can live with it. I just hate it when it's forced down my throat... and just defies everything set forth before. Like a big middle finger to the audience as if they're just too stupid to live with a complex "Not Everybody Wins" ending. Now the same goes for everybody dying "Just Because", I hate those just as much.

And where are the flat-out "No" and "No, I need to angst more..." options?

I feel like you don't need the 'but it helps' justification. Sometimes a story CAN'T have a happy ending. Also it depends on what side of the story you're looking at. If the pretty blonde ends up with the poor yet charming blue collar worker, what about the EQUALLLY charming rich guy who loved her just as much!? ITS NOT FAIR DAMMIT!!!!
Ahem.....sorry. Got a little carrried away there.

A happy ending doesn't necessarily make a good movie, but it can help, especially if it's well done.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, for example. What? I liked that film.

How about just a plain and simple "No"?

Arlington Road is an awesome movie and it has a very unsettling ending.

Honestly a movie doesn't need to have a happy ending, it depends on what kind of film you're making. It does piss me off that some movies that are made with a dark ending have to be remade because of test audiences hating the ending just so people can have happy thoughts regardless of what the movie was aiming for (like with I am Legend and numerous other films).

That said I don't mean is movies that are dark need to have a sad or grim ending. Its more of letting the director/writers go with what they envision rather than letting test audiences and corporate owners change endings.

How about an option for just plain no? A happy ending is not always the best one.

A Happy Ending I really love is Lost in Translation's.
How did "Lost in Translation" have a happy ending?? (caution LiT spoilers ahead... duh)
These two were having such a great, magical time, and then just split up and go back to their respective lives, as if nothing ever happened!! She's still unsure of her future, and of her marriage, and he's going back to making stupid whiskey advertisements.
Loved the film, though, don't get me wrong.

OT: I'm a sucker for happy endings. I've been around too long not to know that things don't always work out the way you've planned them, and that "they lived happily ever after" happens more often in books than in real life. That's part of the reason why I prefer films in which there's a happy ending, in which everything just falls together: the boy gets the girl, the protagonist solves the murder, the stranded crew gets home, whatever. **However** there are still some great films out there in which things don't work out. Like @Tijuanatim said, some stories just can't work out, aren't meant to work out. Romeo and Juliet wouldn't be Romeo and Juliet if they'd lived happily ever after.

Nah, I don't need one. But the ending needs to be appropriate. Happy endings for the sake of it and sad endings for the sake of it are shit.

No and it doesn't help, it mostly hinders. I'm still waiting for a proper adaptation of I am Legend.

edit: Wait what the fuck is up with the poll? I didn't click yes. Cheater!

One of my favorite musicals is Moulin Rouge, and that sure as hell didn't have a happy ending. Also, all movies have sad endings, some just cut off before we get to see it

He's saying that he liked paranormal activity even though the ending was "bad"

It depends on the type of movie for me, but as long as the ending seems like a natural outcome usually I prefer the movie to end on a high note. Meaning as long as they don't pull some half assed deus ex machina out of nowhere to make an ending a happy ending like bringing a dead character back to life with little to no explanation or the power of love magically making the hero able to beat the bad guy, a happy ending is nice, though not always necessary.

The movie The Mist had a frickin happy ending! Read the short story by Stephen King, and then try to tell me that you think the ending of the movie was unhappy.
