Everyone who played Diablo 2 should remember the old "Hardcore mode", but I'll elaborate before I get into the question itself.

In Diablo 2, there was a sort of "hardmode" that would play just like the normal mode of Diablo 2 with one exception: when your character died, there was NO bringing them back and you had to start a brand new character to take their place.

The question is, would this "Hardcore mode" be worthwhile in other games?

It could be fun. Sort of like the iron skull in Halo 3, right?

I'm trying to imagine myself dying in say, ARMA 2, then the next time I try to play the game, I'm told by Steam that my Avatar died and is currently en route to get cremated. Actually, ignore that first part, although that would have been pretty funny. I think that extra layer of challenge is worthwhile. Who wouldn't want to boast about finishing a game without dying a single time? :)

No. Get it away from me.

If it's only an option, I don't see why not. It's easy to code as well. Hell, making the menu option that says "Hardcore mode" would take longer than coding it.
That said, it would actually make some parts easier, since you'll be twice as prepared for everything, and then some.

If there's one thing that I hate, it's having to backtrack. Having to backtrack the entire game, on the other hand, is completely mornic. The thought that 5 seconds of poor play could erase 10-20 hours of gameplay is completely moronic to me.

Had a bad experience with Hardmode in Diablo 2.
Played it with a friend in local co-op (I had two PC's networked via IPX/SPX), and his char sortof died because of my fault.

We where fighting this creature in the desert that released annoying lightning that arcs all around when you hit it. And I kept hitting hit, but my friend couldn't keep up healing as he was in close being a Barbarian and all. So he died, and I felt bad...

Haha. I remember going through something similar on my Sorc.

I made the unfortunate decision to specialize in lightning. Mephisto spanked me. It was hot.

No. Raising a Diablo 2 character takes dozens or hundreds of hours and a single death that all your work is totally blow. Not to mention that deaths caused by lag are the leading cause of me dieing in Dialbo 2 so I don't want to risk my hard work on a sudden internet clog causing me to die randomly.

Oh god for RPGs and no saving? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
But referring to Hardcore mode for OPFP2 and CoD4, less health and a removed hud means more emphasis on tactics and taking cover. This is better for league play and pubs in general.

Aw man, I feel your pain!
And that Mephisto... yeah, no fun if you specced your charactar in some ways.
Also, on Hell mode the resistances where a bit unfair towards magic users.
I had this unique Balista (500+ base damage crossbow), and it became my only means of attack, as all my fire and lightning magic that was awesome before turned to poo because even a regular zombie was immune; not funny :(
