I can personally attest to competitive swimming being really intense. There is not one muscle that is not used while swimming and when you're actually trying to swim as fast as possible I think you'd be surprised how fast you actually get tired. Swimming competitively is one of the best cardio exercises out there and it does strengthen muscles due to water resistance being greater than air. Also, on my swim team, they want us to breathe as little as possible to be a hydrodynamic as possible, so the lack of oxygen kind of hurts after awhile

Hardball (which is like paintball but with small plastic bullets instead of paintball) where i play the covers are really low, so you have wo walk around with your knees around your head to avoid beeing shot. Damn my legs hurt several days after playing.

Not to be THAT guy, but I find it hard to consider one sport universally harder than others. Really, it depends on the athlete: for a guy with a golden throwing arm, maybe being a baseball pitcher is easiest. But, what if this same guy is hopeless on ice-skates; hockey would be toughest.

While any sport is difficult to play at a competitive level, I must say that professional motor racing of the endurance variety is the most demanding that I know of. In some forms of motorsport, the physical strain has made drivers sweat off 6-10 pounds of water in less than two hours. And if your car is not handling well, then add in the strain of forcing the car to go where you want it.

Racing is demanding, but back in the 1950s it was the manliest sport of all time, since the cars had very little protection. Now with all the safety features these days, that manliness is not as prevalent.

Competitive swimming and running are certainly the toughest sports to train for/compete in, at least in team sports you can get subbed out if you're really freaking tired.

Competitive Mixed Martial Arts. I've been in the ring once with an actual MMA figher.
Never again.

I play a crap load of sports, and the one that is absolutely the hardest is wrestling. I remember wrestling at tournament and going 6 minutes in the finals for first and then going into overtime. i eventually won in overtime but every muscle (and i can even remember the feeling today) felt like somebody took a hammer and just beat each part of my body.

i'd also like to say this. "futbol" is tiring if you go in to win but i just think it's sad that the players get injured so easily (minus skull injuries that is understandable) i mean one slide tackle and they need fucking surgery that's just dumb i'm sorry but wow.

Water Polo. Oh god, it's rough. You've never seen a game till you get a high school girls water polo team. They are an evil bunch of players. I've seen girls walk away with bruises and bleeding cuts from the nails on some of the competitors.

From the word go (meaning, starting from no experience), Im going with hockey. You have to balance on two tiny peices of steel, and handle a 2 inch diameter piece of rubber at the end of a 5 foot stick, all while worrying about the other players running into you to cause you pain. On top of that its probably one of the fastest paced games out there.
Hockey is very fun though, in my opinion.
