One mainly for UK residents here, as I doubt many from overseas will know or care who our "Equalities Minister" is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harriet_Harman.
Is it just me, or is this woman the most deluded and openly hypocritical human being on the planet? This week she put forward plans outlining that in future, government contracts will be awarded on the basis of how good a record a company has on promoting "equality" - with especial reference to how many women that company employs. Personally I'm totally opposed to this positive discrimination (or "Affirmative Action") nonsense that Harman has based her career around. I see the reason for it, and discrimination in the workplace is terrible, but surely this is not the right economic climate for introducing yet more legislation in the way of the free market - the move has already been condemned by business leaders.
I think this kind of well-meaning but ill thought-out initiative will cost Labour any chance they have at the next election, condemning us all to five years of "Thrifty Dave".
So, what I want to know really is, do you think Harriet Harman is a positive force in UK politics, or a negative one?
