Poll: Has TF2 Gone To Far?

So many of you that play PC games might play TF2 as well. I have noticed a massive amount of tie in items that you get in TF2 if you preorder certain games and it bothers me a great deal. Many won't give a second glance while others will complain, but my question is, has Team Fortress 2 gone over the edge with the collectible hats and weaponry? I am one of those Vanilla players who do enjoy a bit of the updates like the Spy's Poly Count or the Soldier's Direct Hit. But lately its felt very watered down. When will Valve stop updating TF2?

I don't know, those updates really keep the community alive and they keep the gameplay fresh due to the new weapons adding newer strategies for classes.

I think Valve doesn't have enough ideas for the next Team Fortress game or they think they can get away with milking the most recent one for a couple more years.

Either way, they need to get some change into gear.

It went too far with the Pyro update. And there is still no vanilla mode to fix it.
None of this would be so bad if Valve created some official Vanilla Servers, with any map just default weaponry. Ironically that would be a rather fresh breath of air.

Honestly, I'm torn. It might be I'm just sick of the game after ~650 hours, but even ignoring the obvious cash grab stuff (Noisemakers? Is anyone actually buying those?) there feels like too much stuff. I remember them talking in commentary about being able to easily tell what weapon a class was using and what that means. That's gone. That spy could have a normal watch, or he could be sitting there all day, or he might not really be dead, or he might be one of those assbag saharan spies. That pyro could be a engie buddy with a homewrecker, he could be a degrease + axetinguish ninja, or he could be a backburner. Does that heavy have the uber minigun, the normal one, or the slowdown one, and does he have a sandvich or meat or chocolate, and does he have the fast gloves, the steel gloves, the melee claws? Information overload

I love how there are all these new weapons coming out constantly. It keeps the game fresh, with new alternatives for playing different ways. The day that they stop adding new items will be a sad day.

Updating a game for free with new content?

Yep they really should stop doing that!

All these new items are obtainable on a % chance by just chilling out and playing, right?

I guess you could buy them if you were in a rush, but as long as you can get them for free I really don't see the problem. It's not like some microtransaction MMO where people who pay get 600% experience points with an uncapped maximum level or something. Those weapons are okay, but none of them is amazing.

I don't think you guys understand. Sure Vavle are awesome for updating their game for free, which is why they are one of my favorite developpers. But, i have stopped playing tf2, for the sheer tidal wave of new items that are becoming more abstract and annoying. Tf2 has become too cluttered with dumb weapons for me to play now.

If by "milking the game" we mean "repeatedly updating it with free, fresh content", then I say, yes, TF2 has gone to far. I also say, GO FARTHER, TF2, YOU'RE DOING GREAT
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!

[sub][sub][sub] I'm sorry [/sub][/sub][/sub]

OT: I have to agree with you the mix is getting very complicated but hell free stuff is free stuff

It became way too much about Hats and the weaponry just got way too silly. I stopped playing for about a month, then when I tried to go back the game was really inaccessible due to all this new content. So I stopped, and if I ever tried to get back into it the flood of new and pointless crap would overwhelm me.

You just have to hope Valve isn't going to pull the Rift shit again. If you bought Rift, you got "genuine" versions of the weapons. If you crafted them, you got the shittier versions of the weapons. As long as Valve doesn't pull that again, item-lovers, go nuts. I stopped playing TF2 long time ago.

I love TF2 and even though I feel like its watered down I will never stop playing. But there was one time during the introduction to "hats" that almost through me over the edge. People became obsessed with hats and still are. Honestly its shit like hats that make me question if this game is as awesome as it was three years ago when a Spy was hated and if you saw a Heavy Medic combo you actually needed to think about how to take them down. It kinda feels superficial because of all these kids want hats for crates and don't even get me started on "KEYS".

I prefer it to all the countless games that drop support after release or charge you for more. Hell, a central game on the service to keep receiving bonouses seems like a positive thing to me.

I'm unfamiliar with this Rift scenario though, so maybe I've just not taken notice of the bad points. Frankly I'm fine focussing on what's to be gained.

EDIT: Oh, they're not just cosmetic...well there better be another way to get them then or I'm changing my opinion here.

I dunno. I mean if people stopped spending 15 dollars/euros on stupid cosmetic items, they'd probably stop releasing them, right? But hey, it's their money, they can throw at whoever they want.

I'm probably a bit jealous and consequently a bit resentful towards people who have money to spend on such things, so I might not be completely objective.

I'm actually having fun with some of the new weaponry in the Shogun update, though I will admit that they've been getting into the funhole of marketing ploys a lot more lately. But its a sound way of making money.

You don't HAVE to get the items! You can still find them as normal for free, its idiots like me that will pay for them to keep the awesome game running with new content so we can find new ways to bludgeon enemies to death.

You can craft the Rift weapons. The only difference between the crafted ones and the ones you got through pre-order is that the pre-order ones are of genuine quality [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Quality#genuine]. Or at least that's how I understood it.
