Depends on the context, with your buddies on a cold day, its fine. In a restaurant or something, not usually.
Taking off your hat indoors is as an old tradition that's not really practiced by today's generation; much like the tradition of placing one's hand over your heart (or standing at attention, for those of us veterans) when the National Anthem is played.

Hats are for outside. I do wear hats, but not all the time. Only when the mood strikes me, and all winter long. That being said I consider anywhere you might be wearing a jacket to be perfectly good to wear a hat, such as a mall.
If you're wearing a hat inside someone's house, you're an inconsiderate ass no matter what. Of course I also make people take off their shoes when they enter my house.
P.S. I take exception to the "hand over heart during the national anthem" comment above. That's a purely American gesture. We prefer to sing our national anthem up here.

I don't think it should be impolite to wear a hat indoors, but regardless of if it is or isn't, there are only three situations where I will willingly take my hat off:
1) When in class
2) When eating
3) When in a church

I don't understand the social convention of not wearing hats indoors, but I don't like wearing hats myself.
I wear a baseball hat at work because of sun protection but do wear it indoors at lunchtimes because i'm in a very Hard-yakka type workplace and it doesn't feel like I need to(secretly I don't take it off because I don't want to worry about my hair).
But generally I agree that people should take their hats off indoors. Most people won't do that, but I'll expect them to take it off for eating at a dinner table.
I would be as happy as a schoolgirl if people touched the tip of their hats as a sign of respect, but nobody does it these days.....

I don't care much for the trying to figure out what is "rude". I'll do what I need to do, as long as it doesn't offend people.
OT: The very idea of wearing hats indoors being offensive or rude is just plain ridiculous. There is no reason for it, other than it's been considered rude for a very long time, and people fear being in the wrong when it comes to being rude. So they tell them to take off their hats.

Well, I don't really wear any kind of hats, but I think it depends on where you are going. If the place asks you to remove your hat, you should.
I consider it rude. Walking in to a home / institution / restaurant with a hat on is fine, walking around said establishment with the hat on while entering or exiting is fine, but if you sit down or remove / check your coat, you should remove your hat.
I also live in Canada, so in the winter hats are required. It is not fun to sit next to someone wearing a toque that is wet and possibly smelly.

hats are as much of a part of peoples appearance as is their hair. if i thought i looked better with a hat i can and will wear it indoors. the only exception is weddings, funerals, etc.
