Theres only two things my mum and step dad every argue about - whether or not times have changed, and whats on TV (though they rarely argue about either). This thread is obviously about the first argument they can have.
My step dad argues that society has not changed - people still behave the way they used to years ago. I and my mum disagree. We both say that people don't care about each other anymore. No one is as polite as they used to be. Thieves wouldn't steal a man's livelihood, for example they wouldn't steal the tools of a builder.
Im not in the best position to argue on either side of this argument as i'm only 16 at the moment, but i've seen and been told things people used to do or wouldnt do in the past that isn't the same today. For example, people used to leave their keys hanging on a string inside their house next to the letterbox, and their houses would be completely fine. Theres no way you could do that now. My step dad's argument against that is that people didn't have anything worth stealing in those days, but i doubt that. Theres almost always something someone will have that someone else will want.
Others things i've heard or read that can happen nowdays that i higly doubt used to happen: I once read an article in a newspaper that said some twatty dickheads broke into an old woman's home, terrorized her for a bit then left, leaving her shocked to the spot for several hours(though it probably youths instead of 'twatty dickheads').
There was also one time years ago that my mum helped a kid who had fallen over and hurt himself back to his house, where is mum, not paying any attention to my mum, shouted "What the fuck have you done now you little shit!?" at the kid before taking him into their house and slamming the door.
I doubt either of those two things would've happened years ago. Maybe the one with the child might have, but it would've been much less common.
I've also got a bunch of other things I can think of, but that will do for now.
Anyway, out of random curiosity, im interested to see what the members of The Escapist think about whether or not things have changed.
So, have times changed? Are people different and more selfish, or are people the same as they've always been?
Also i apologize if what i said is hard to make sense of. I know what im thinking but i've always been terrible at writing it and something tells me people won't understand what i mean.
