Recently my PS3 broke, this was the second time and it was a refurbished one, Sony said they would fix it for 100 pounds, instead i choose to have a crack at it since it would be cheaper, it works now but i wondered if anyone here has fixed their console or their PC.

FYI it cost me 15 pounds to fix the PS3 on my own, it works fine now (Knock on wood)

I fix my PC and other peoples all the time, I'm the only person they know that enjoys doing so.

I have taken apart numerous Xbox 360s that i pretty much know them like the back of my hand now. This was due to the dreaded RROD. I'm now on my fourth.

My PC is custom built, not by me though. It also cost £5,000 and breaks down every few months. At first though this was due to the shoddy service of the company. For crying out loud, it has 2x nvidia 295 GTX, doesn't have liquid cooling and they don't bother to put an extra fan on the motherboard? My mobo has died more times then i care to imagine, though i'm out of warranty now. Right now my issue is that if i play a graphically intensive game like Crysis or Anno 1404 the computer bluescreens and freezes. When i restart, one of the graphic cards are flashing red. Apparantly it's due to a lack of power. Strangely though the performance in-game is superb. I have removed and fitted a new power pack by myself before and fiddled with the RAM and graphic cards, so i know the guts of my computer quite well.

I guess PC problems are better to solve than problems on a console. For me, my computer must be pretty FUBAR if I can't fix it, after nearly working 3,5 years in ICT I would cry and hang my head in shame if I didn't.

Yes, because I'm too poor to call in a technician every time my computer breaks down. It's not too difficult, because most of the time it's just the same things that go wrong and I know what to look for. I used to be awful at fixing the physical parts of my computer, because being me, I couldn't open the back of it. But now that I've unscrewed it I've learnt my way around it and I find it pretty easy to fix. Unfortunately now everyone asks me to fix their computer for them. If I used a console though, I probably wouldn't fix it. I'd just send it in.

I fixed my Wii's broken Eject button...But if I have to open the console up, no.

As for my PC, if it breaks, our neighbor fixes computers for a living, and will usually take a look at it for free.

I'm a PC gamer, nobody tels you when you start, but fixing things is a fundamental skill all PC gamers need to have. Although the more work I do myself the less frequently I have to do it...

Youch, I hope you've got at least a 900W supply on that thing.

Here's the real kick in the teeth, i have a 1200W supply and still the second graphic card is lacking power.

If it interests you i have 12GB of RAM and a 3.2 quad intel i7 processor. I also have a 1 terabyte hard drive and two smaller 280GB hard drives that were linked in RAID but have since removed that since it caused a real mess of problems.

Xbox 360 has broken down a couple of times (three guesses why). I couldn't play it for three weeks at a time (solved that by saving up for seven months on pocket money, back in the good old days when I didn't have a part-time job, and buying a second one to go on the second TV) but it didn't cost me a dime to send to Sydney and back.

Well, I did mess up the homebrew channel on our Wii, but that managed to fix itself.

Whenever I've had a problem on my old laptop (after it first went 100% kaput) I'd fix it (i.e. getting rid of spyware manually)

Yes, I had to replace the Hard drive on my laptop after it decided that 1 week after warranty was all it wanted out of life and killed itself.

The one time my 360 failed on me, I just bundeled it off to microsoft. They were paying for it and I didn't want to bugger about with it...

well... i have fixed EVERYTHING that can be fixed, TV´s, Phones, Pc´s, Laptops, a 2g Ipod, my N64, a PSone, and once a Vacuum cleaner...

but i fear the current gen consoles, i dont know why??, perhaps its the fact that they cost over 600 bucks here in MX and if i fuck up i would have to pay those bucks to get a new one.

btw... i have no idea how i fixed most of them, usually i would open the thing up and "smell" the parts, if one smelled burned or looked obviously broken i would just take that part to a "parts dealer" (a little store with EVERYTHING that can be in an electronic device, probably stolen) and show the part to him, ask for a new one, if he doesnt have it he would "get" one in a week or so (yeah, definitely stolen), replace, pack again, and its done!

oddly enough, i mostly just had to fix things once, as if the new part was of better quality than the old one

I fixed the disk drive on my 360. It's a lot easier than I thought. It was out of warranty and I didn't want to have to pay to ship it back to Microsoft just to have them send me a new one.

I build my own PCs as building a top of the line PC is a damn sight cheaper then buying one. When I build my currect one (3yrs ago) I spent £1500 (big processor) when the equivalent in the shops was about £2-2.5K. I've had to replace the power supply after it blew up and I've also upgraded the RAM and got new HDs.

Tempted to get a new graphics card, but I can run all games on at least medium so still dont see the point.

My dad repaired a friend of his' XBox 360, he says he can fix mine if it ever red-rings. It beats mailing the thing to Microsoft.

I built my own PC and periodically changed the parts (Ram/GPU).

My PS2 got an overheating problem before, so I looked up a few guides and then took it apart, cleaned out some innards, put it back together again and the problem was gone.

Other than that, I've never had to fix any of my consoles or PCs. Well, hardware wise. Software I've had to mess about with my PC once or twice but for the most part it's been pretty solid.

I've never had to fix a console, but I have to fix my PC sometimes. Lately I've run into some issues here and there when OCing it. So far the only thing I couldn't fix was when it was having serious issues booting up after a really bad freeze/crash. Turns out the mobo died (after a whole 3 weeks lol) so I brought it into the store and after a week they gave it back with a shiny new mobo. Went from an MSI P55GD65 to an Asus P7P55D PRO so a small but nice upgrade for me there. There's been tons of other small issues tho, like crossfire issues on my 5850s or games having tantrums.
