I've almost got my e8400@3ghz clocked to 4ghz.

And I was just wondering have many others decided to overclock thier rigs?

If so, why did you do it?

...Mr.Pandah is not amused.

Edit: I did it to learn (edited since you actually put something down)

Nope, might when I actually get my own rig (my Dad wouldn't let me overclock his), but until then, no.

Well actually, i am just preparing to overclock now - doing some research and such. But then, my PC already has a 2.66GHz Quad, so i dont NEED to, as such, i just WANT to, because some programs only support one or two cores, and the more powerful the core the faster the program right?

I'm not interested in all the extra headaches that overclocking entail. I'd rather save my money and buy a better CPU rather than spend it on high-performance cooling.

I don't know how to overclock, and I'm genuinely too scared to.

On another note; because I don't want to make yet another thread; I need a new computer, in case you hadn't heard already.

Anyone know what to get? I've not had a computer older than Pentium 4, you see.

Besides my Mac, which I'm typing on right now.

I'm too scared to overclock at all on my computer now.

Mostly because its a laptop. But, im gonna download somethin to increase my fan speed and i might try it. jus a very small increase in my processor speed.

I would overclock my computer, but I'm terrified of losing it, as I can't just fork out money for a new one.

There should be the option to choose "Because I wanted to". Need is a bit... dramatic in my opinion.

I have a 2.17GHz Core2Duo overclocked to 2.78GHz because C2Ds are fantastic for overclocking and my ASUS mainboard allows me to overclock simply by dialing in the percentage that I want. Pretty convenient if you ask me - no more tinkering with clock multipliers, FSB speed or voltages like back in the day with the first few generations of Athlons, which were great overclockers in their own right.

With the 30% overclock (I'm sure I can go higher if I wanted to but my computer runs fine for me) the temperature only increases by about 4 degrees Celsius, hovering in the low 40s, so well worth it, I say. You get a cheap-as-chips CPU that rivals much more expensive ones (of course, you could always overclock the more expensive CPU as well, but then you lose the "bang-for-the-buck" factor).

See the thread in my profile if you want to build a new computer :]
Looks cool. I have a few questions though.

See, I'm Australian; will I find a difference in the price?

Also, I'm not experienced with buying stuff online; what do you have to say on the matter?

And I think that's about it.

I believe prices are a bit higher for Australia even when taking the conversion rates into account. But it should be negligible for most parts.

What would you like to know?

http://www.dansdata.com/

That's one of my favorite tech sites of all time and I'm sure he might have more knowledge about building computers in Australia than I would.
Yeah, because the Aussie Dollar sorta caved in less than a month ago. We're picking up, but slowly.

As for buying online; who is legit, how private is it, does it require a credit card and most importantly:

How do I get my parents to approve?

For buying online, I'd see who Dan from dansdata recommends.

And for getting your parents to approve...That's something you'll need to work out on your own :p
Thanks for your help.

I might do a bit of shopping around, and making some calculations, so I can see how much it's going to cost me.

Damn, I wish I bought something 2 months ago...

Krunk, take a look at this store: link [http://www.msy.com.au/] (you can have a look at store locations and part prices). It's a physical store, and it's located quite a few major cities (all I'm aware of is the Sydney one). I find them to be pretty cheap, but it's pure wholesaling; don't expect them to help you build anything.

On the other hand, you have these guys [http://www.bigbencomputers.com.au/]. They're alright, and they'll build the computer for you, but they mark up rpices, so expect to pay more. I've had them fit a new graphics card and some more RAM in, and they're alright.

Hopefully, this helps.

Edit: I've been looking at looking to build my own rig for some time, and so far, for a decent rig (E8400, MSI P35 Neo, 2GB DDR2 800, 512MB 9800GT), I'm expecting to pay about $AU800 (take into account that fact I'm also getting a 19" monitor along with the thing).

Great! Seeming as I live a 20 minute drive away from Auburn, I should have no trouble.

I might take a look at their quote for the parts that Eggo recommended, but it's looking awesome now.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Eggo, on your spreadsheet thingy, you have prices for two different computers; a gaming and another one. What's the difference? What are the capabilities of each?

I overclocked once but a guy putting some RAM in my computer stopped it and turned it down because my RAM is apparently not good for overclocking your CPU. I have forgotten how to OC my rig properly now so if somebody could give me some info on it that would be great. I have a Q6600 which are known for being great overclockers.

The top computer is primarily focused for gaming and the bottom computer is primarily focused for digital multimedia content production (digital video, music, 2D, 3D, animation, etc).

You can definitely do both on either machine, but the second machine has twice as many processing cores, twice as much RAM, and a CUDA-capable video card for DMCP while the first machine has a more powerful video card for modern and future games.
What's CUDA?

Just wondering.

Also; what content would you be creating in relation to Computer 2? Video editing? Excessive Gmod?
