At my University, no less! This is why I didn't join one.

A little hazing (read: not dangerous, not derogatory, and not threatening) is just fine in my opinion, it's part of being accepted in the group.

I remember in the Scouts we invented this 'medical' procedure that new Scouts would supposedly be subject to. It was a vaccination against some made-up disease, but here's the catch: the needle is like, as long as your arm because the vaccine needs 'deep tissue penetration' in order to work.

To sell this, one of the older scouts was always 'due for re-immunization. What we'd have him do is just after the camp safety lecture, one of the counselors would select the Scout and bring him behind the medical cabin. He'd scream and come back out holding his back. Then we'd call the new Scouts and (provided they weren't freaking out too much) they'd go back there and get candy.

All great fun, a silly little prank to play on the new kids that all the old kids were in on.

That's about as far as I can approve on the topic of hazing. The problem is, the average fraternity or sorority would actually use the needle.

As a high school freshman I wasn't hazed because I was (at the time... I was stupid) a (supposedly) scary-looking Satanist who was constantly decked out in heavy metal apparel.

As a college freshman I wasn't hazed because I was a 240-pound former football player who could bench 400 pounds, and was still constantly decked out in heavy metal apparel.

So, while I can't say I have any experience in the matter, it still seems fucking dumb to me.

As someone who has gone through hazing I can say it's a both horrible but ultimately gratifying experience that you need to experience to understand. Getting hazed in the beginning of highschool led me to make incredibly strong bonds with my friends. It's essentially using the same logic as this:

That's logic I'll never understand. I don't get why friends should act that way, because it doesn't seem friendly.

OP: I heard about it, but thought it was just an old American joke. It's something I would never do, and I don't get why somebody would do it.

As far as whether or not I support it? Hell, as long as the participant is (EDIT: at least semi-willingly, if it's a secret one that isn't TOO bad) willingly going through with it, absolutely. I see how it could provide a sense of kinship if everyone goes through the same torture.

If that's the case, it's awful. No one should ever be subjected to hazing. It's stupid, embarrassing, demeaning and possibly harmful. It's also disturbing to think that people can only be accepted by others after being hurt or embarrassed. It seems really damn counter-intuitive; why the hell would you want to spend time with people who are willing to see you hurt for their own amusement?

I, for one, have never been "hazed". I don't think it's going to be an issue in university because I don't see the point of joining any sort of fraternity.

How severe of a hazing are we talking about. Generally, I don't understand official hazings, they are meaningless and just degrade everyone involved. Unofficial hazings however are inevitable. In order to get close to people you need to show you are worth their time, this doesn't always happen the same way, but it is kinda an unofficial hazing.

Also, avoid frats. Total waste of your time.

There's a difference between getting drunk as an initiation and aforementioned shit like eating vomit. A friend of mine is in the rugby team at university and their hazing involves drinking the backwash of a pint out of another team member's crack.

Yeah, fuck that. Why can't everybody do what normal people do at uni and just drink vodka to excess?

hazing puts freshmen in their place. I realize I am the minority here, but honestly with the anti-hazing restrictions in place the freshmen in my high school and then later college act like such entitled little shits. And they can get away with it because if we want to put them in their place then WE get punished for it. I don't advocate for organized hazing initiations, that's just wrong. But not being able to put the annoying little shits in their places is downright dumb. It's allowing a generation to grow up feeling completely entitled to everything, knowing they can get away with whatever they want.

Organized hazing is just silly, but putting a child in their place should not be considered such. Unfortunately it is, so I had to bring it up.

This kind of hazing is acceptable, so long as it doesn't cause lasting damage or considerable damage to property and is also indiscriminate.

Humiliation is good. It teaches you to get the stick out of your ass and stop taking yourself so seriously. I can't get behind physical abuse, but that's not how we've done it in my experience anyway.
