Poll: HD remakes for the newcomer

Ok, I'll admit it: I love a good horror game, but I've never played any of the Silent Hill games. You may berate me as you wish.

However, there is a chance for redemption coming February. The Silent Hill HD Collection is coming, and I'm thinking of buying it.

So, dear internet, I raise the question: if a player is absolutely new to a franchise (like Silent Hill, but you can substitute Halo: Anniversary or Metal Gear Solid HD Collection if you so desire), is it ok to play a HD remake to get up to speed.

Also, I know that the HD remake doesn't have the first Silent Hill, which saddens me.

Merrrrm, errr, difficult to say. I don't think you really need the first Silent Hill game to understand the ones that follow, so you could start on the re-releases, but I'm a pedantic arse that has to do everything in order, so I personally would play the first one first then move on to re-releases.

For the ones that start from the beginning though, like Serious Sam or God of War, I tend to go straight to re-release. Not exactly missing anything, just gaining polygons.
