When I was little and there were still VHS, (I grew up in the 90's), my Dad introduced me to a movie called Heavy Metal. It proved to me that not all animation was cute and nice but could also be kickass and brutal. It also had a awesome soundtrack. The movie was notable for combining both fantasy and science fiction and tying together with the power of rock.
Brutal Legend is a videogame that is also tied together by the power of rock, with a world ripped straight from the illustrations of the album covers of various bands. It also has an awesome soundtrack and combines elements of science fiction and fantasy.
But I like the movie Heavy Metal better, but that's just me. What do you people think?

Hmm really hard choice. The metal gods are pleased with both. I had to go with heavy metal because it came first and it got me into animation.

Heavy Metal will always be the ultimate tribute to Rock and Metal. Till the new one comes out and hopefully kicks more Metal ass than the first one.

How about neither? I personally prefer Tenacious D.
Yeah, they defeated the devil and Dio said they where the most awesome band ever. Does anyone here want to argue with Dio?

I'd say Brütal Legend, mainly because I haven't seen the film you're talking about. Sorry. Also, the headbangers in Brütal Legend are incredibly awesome.

No. We do not. That would be blasphemy, my friend.

nope i wouldn't argue with Dio he's awesome. he also pays tenacious D to stop playing an altered version of his song and make them play some tenacious D. if you want to see it just watch the music video to push by Dio.
OT: ive not seen heavy metal so i might hunt for it. so its brutal legend all the way for me im afraid

Wait, wait, your Dad let you watch that despite all the sex scenes!?

Well, truth be told, I haven't played Brutal Legends, so my vote goes to Heavy Metal.

It's worth noting that South Park chose to parody Heavy Metal -- one of my favorite episodes ever.

Edit: Heavy Metal trailer included to whet the appetite of the uninitiated:

I will definetly argue with Dio when it comes to Tenacious D. I think it may just be my lack of affection for Jack Black.

I would have to say Brutal Legend - from the start it was intended to be an homage to Metal and Rock music, featuring many of the tropes of those genres. Heavy Metal, on the other hand, is really just about crazy sci-fi/fantasy fiction, which incidentally works well with a metal soundtrack. If I recall, the movie is originally based on a magazine that featured stories and comics of a similar nature to the ones in the movie, and didn't really have anything at all to do with music. It's still awesome, though.

I voted Brutal Legend, because I agree with this and love Tenacious D. I don't want the Metal Gods to rain storms of fire and musical wrath upon me, and I'm definitely not arguing with Dio...

"Heavy" is what all metal should be! \m/
And saddly isn't considering how many emo-metal bands there are out there

OT: I'm gonna have to go with Brutal Legend

I don't get the fascination people have with Tenacious D. They guys are funny, but for true musical substance, what I have heard has been quite lacking.

Admittedly I have only heard a handful of songs, but none of them sounded good. Comparing them to an epic tribute such as Heavy Metal feels wrong.

That being said, it is a hard choice between Heavy Metal and Brutal Legend for me. I love Heavy Metal, but Brutal Legend has been on the best games I have played in a LONG time. Gonna go with the classic though.

Never heard of said movie so i'm unfortunately gonna be biased here but Brutal Legend is awesomeness and i'll agree with the guy about Dio. Arguing against that man will get you a most painful smiting from the gods.

Heavy Metal. My first introduction into adult animation, western or eastern. Heavy Metal 2000 just plain SUCKED. But the first one, now that was like a work of art. And let's face it, the Neverwhere story is just any given nerd's wet dream. Think about it.
