I maxed out speech and guns on my first playthrough and by the game's end i was invincible! Had plenty of points left over to balance out over some other perks. I didn't chose a side either. I took New Vegas as my own and wouldn't have it any other way so i will not be playing it a second time round.

Speech is something that is always required in my books. Got lots of freebies and discounts.

The NCR is good to side with. As for skills Speech is the best skill in the game I tag speech, Guns and lockpick. Repairs is also helpful because at 90 repair you can pick a perk (jury rigging) that makes repairing rare items easier. Special wise I would say
S 6
P 6
E 5
C 6
I 10
A 6
L 1
Is good to use.
I would never have luck on one, or in fact NEVER less than 6. Since critical hits weren't in Oblivion, everybody ignored luck, and seems to do the same for fallout. Each point of luck is an extra critical chance, meaning with high luck, the easy to obtain 1st Recon beret and a few books and perks you could have up to 20% crit chance, 1 in 5 shots doing between 2x and 3x damage (depending on the weapon and where you are aiming).
This coupled with perks like meltdown and better criticals gets you out of a sticky situation just as often, if not more than speech.
Yes, luck is useful and you made good points because critical chance is very good. I use other perks and equipment to make my crtical chance somewhat decent because I love sneaking.

Hello everyone, I'm in a spot of bother with fallout new vegas.

I am about to start a third playthrough of this excellent game, and I have no idea what type of character to make, what faction to side with, good or bad, guns or melee, energy or explosive, etc. or even if i'm going to be relativity peaceful this time round.

just to fill you in, first playthrough quick talking gunslinger with MR house.

second playthrough dumb explosives guy.

any suggestions or comments? any particular setups which worked very well for you?

I'd love to hear your feedback.
play melee as legion. melee is a very different experience, and legion kicks ass!

I always use Speech whenever I can in a game but I honestly thought that no one else used it.

I cant help but think I play NV some what differently from everyone else since my points always go into Sneak first then Energy weapons then Repair and scavenger at the first chance I get so I never need to buy anything XD

looking at the SPECIAL builds in this thread, I don't see a reason to have more than 1 point in Charisma. The other stats just give more benefits whilst there is no difference between 1 Charisma/100 Speech and 10 Charisma/100 Speech. I also have not noticed any Charisma speech checks where it could be useful

Well, it does increase companion nerve, which makes them tougher and deal more damage, so it's not totally usesless. 'specially for characters like Veronica who get up close to enemies and have high burst damage attacks.

Good moral usually has all the perks.
NCR, Brotherhood (Untie the two), The Followers (Untite them with the NCR too), and all the other good factions.

To be frank I would go with speech, med and guns, but dont worry if you get all DLC you will have alot of time to upgrade...alot to the max, my guy is invinsible, BWHAHA.
But ill list the best ones.

Speech - Can convince people for you advantage (Get 100 and you can do anything with your mouth)
Meds - Some of the best quests have you healing people, so its a good one to get for yourself and quests.
Guns - Obivously you would need this to kill everyone, guns are the most common thing you find out there (Exept for malee, but against a deathclaw, your screwed!)

Also spend time to upgrade, repair,

Others:
Barter - (Reduce prices)
Explosives - (More damage to the g-nades and all, also a few quests can be solved with this)
Repair - Repair weps, armour and also for quests.
Unarmed - Awesome punching without repairs or ammo

Also make sure its suited to your playstyle, thats works out the best, I play as a member that can talk, barter, shoot, heal, punch my way out of anything.

sneak + lockpick + speech + anykind of weapon skill = win

repair, barter, suvival and medicine are all pretty useless in new vegas

Science!

Well, strictly it's melee weapons as you need to kill things and that's probably the best way to do it, but aside from that Science is the skill that comes in useful again and again.

Speech is hands down the most useful across the game. Let's you get bonus rewards or talk your way into/out of things etc.
True if you don't have black widow/Lady Killer and Le {something or other}/confirmed bachelor. That said I got it to 100 a soon as possible. Along with Guns.

I went guns if your a shooter player but true if your a person who enjoys a challenge.

Speech,it can be very helpful and can get you out of akward situouns(dunno how to spell it correctly)
is that a Radscorpion from fallout 1 and 2?

OT: Speech, high luck and energy weapons. Get the right build and you can have pretty much a 100% critical hit chance.

And then you slaughter.
