So, having soon finished a very important piece of work, I am planning to reward myself with a current-generation Mumorpuger to play and waste some free time in. Since the last ones I really played were WoW (pre-expansion), DaoC and Star Wars Galaxies, you can imagine that my grasp on what is currently 'in' has disappeared somewhat. I do still play Face of Mankind from time to tine, but that game is a very special case and does not really cover the same bases the game I want to buy now should.
With the market having gotten really hard to oversee, I am now wondering: which game will give me the best gaming experience for my money? I enjoy accessible, friendly communities that are not above role-playing, decent character customization and a great, explorable world. The game should have enough players to sustain the former and a good amount of early and mid-game content. In other words: it should be easy to meet other players and work together with them and it should be possible, similar to WoW, to get into the mid-levels without any long grinding sprees, i.e. mainly by solving quests.
The main contenders for my attention right now are The Old Republic and The Secret World, with the former having the advantage of being Star Wars, while the latter is newer, probably more active and has a very interesting Lovecraftian touch with investigation and so forth to it. Of course, I could also sink some money into a premium account for a F2P game such as LotRO, but I am not so sure about that one as I am not really a huge fan of the LotR universe.
So there it is, my dilemma. Maybe there are games that I am not aware of that are worth my time and money, and I would love to check those out - so if you have a different proposition, go ahead. I would greatly appreciate any input on my problem as to where the advantages of each choice lie.
