Ok, in many games, especially RPGs, you can often develop your special attacks into either high damage attacks that affect one target, or into area of effect attacks that do less damage but spread the pain to whole groups of enemies. For instance, in ME2, if I max out the Incinerate power, I can either upgrade it to do huge damage or make the fireball big enough to affect whole squads.

Obviously, being able to have both is preferable. But if you have to choose, what direction do you prefer?

Me personally, I go for single target, high damage attacks. I'd rather have one enemy dead right now so he'll stop shooting me, rather than doing damage to a bunch of guys but killing none of them. What do you think, Escapists?

For the majority of games I would favor AOE, usually a lot more of the little people than REALLY big ones that require high damage

It really depends on the situation. Am I fighting 10,000 little guys who konk over with a misplaced fart, or am I facing 6 guys who laughed comfortably in the darkest depths of hell?

It's purely up to the situation.

Whichever looks cooler, to be honest. That's the reason, in Disgaea 2, I'm focusing more on Dark X Slash, a 1-enemy hit attack than something like, say, Dimension Slash, an attack that hits 5 enemies in a row.

Pow, haha! Now I don't need to worry about that one anymore!

Single target attacks please. Just give me a healer and someone who can occasionally strike multiple targets on my team and I'm happy.

This is a duplicate thread, isn't it? Maybe you should PM a Mod and ask if it can be merged with the more popular version.

There's an extent to which it varries from game to game, that said, I usually go with the Area of Effect. It may bring me a little more damage in the short run, but in the long run I feel that it tends to pay off.

When I think of this, I think about the soldier in TF2. I prefer the good ol splash damage and hit 3 guys and helping out the team rather than trying to kill a single guy out of a group.
More guys injured = more of a chance that your teammates will be able to stop them

Big damage. If the peons can be taken out easily with AOE then they can be taken out easily with this pistol round. It is nice to be prepared for the boss fights.

We all know it is context based. The question is asking which do you prepare? Would you rather walk around with a AOE attack or a big damage attack.

I usually go for high damage attacks, as the only time I require attacks like that are when Im fighting bosses or other powerful entities.

Also, is there supposed to be a poll? I dont see one.

I always go for area attacks, I like to rain down destruction on multiple enemies at the same time...

Hmmm. I guess I get kinda both, especially in Guild Wars. An Elementalist with fire spells is good for both AoE and high damage, though I usually end up more along the lines of AoE, clearing the mobs so the actual tanks can handle the larger enemies.

I tend to focus on different targets, the high value ones as I call them. High value targets such as monsters that can slow or knock you down, do massive damage, or have magic need to be killed quickly, so high damage is better, unless it is a team game, that is another story.

Yeah, my internet belched and accidentally posted the thing twice. How do I get in touch with a mod? I haven't had to do it before.
