I've been called a hipster on plenty of occasions, but it really depends on who you talk to and what your definition of the word is (i.e. my taste in music is varied and downright obscure at times, I stay away from "fashion" mostly out of lack of funds and practicality, etc.). Not being self-loathing, I don't dislike hipsters.
Well I think it all about attitude, I have a lot of easing going friends, who will listen to whatever they enjoy musically and generally wear whatever's comfortable, never openly trying to draw attention to themselves. They're cool and definitely "Indie", these people are fun to hang out with.
But I also know a lot of people (main arts students) who try to go out of their way to be seen as "alternative" and will immediately jump ship on a band if it goes mainstream, who dress in ridiculous coloured clothing on purpose and wear items like scarves, mass produced ironic t-shirts or fedoras (if it's not with a suit, you shouldn't wear one). Who will say a random movie is their favourite simply because no one has seen, rather than actually enjoying it. These people are loud and annoying and will constantly try to explain why they are so "indie".
At the end of the day its like being seen as "cool", it's the people who don't have to draw attention to themselves to appear cool that are the coolest. The same with "indie" people.

Yes, they get pretty annoying. When you're in LA you'll see them a lot. Be prepared.

It's easier if you're a guy, but in general if you want a pair of jeans that's going to fit well, not stretch, and last more than a year, you've got to spend up. Nothing wrong with paying for quality.Donnyp said:

What I find funny is that the freshly immigrated asians at my university dress the exact same way as these hipsters. If you're asian and dress like that, you're being a FOB (fresh off the boat). If you're not, you're hipster. Just seems like a sort of double-standard, although both groups are looked down upon by other groups. That could be said for any group ever, though.

My jeans cost $50 Canadian, which is about $40 USD. They're good quality, last forever, fit well, and feel nice. If you really want to know, they're Calvin Klein. You can get nice jeans for that price. I couldn't justify spending more than around $70 on a pair. I heard someone I know spent $700 on a pair once...Mother Yeti said:

Anyway, about the actual topic, by all the reactions here I apparently must be glad that I've never encountered them. But then again, my village is filled with hicks, not sure what's worse.
But by the looks of it, they're the people who try too hard at being unique and special. People like that always leave a bad taste in my mouth.

The question of "am I a hipster?" has been perturbing me lately.
- Currently wearing a Pavement t-shirt (other t-shirts I often wear are The Vaselines, Nick Cave and Los Campesinos!), 2 year old converse, thick rimmed glasses and a maroon cardigan. My jeans are fairly loose fitting, and they cost £10 from M&S. Currently beardless.
- Music taste is does largely consist of "hipster indie" but also plenty of classic rock, rap and jazz. However, if you take Pitchfork to be a fairly accurate measurement of what is hipster, they have sung praises of metal (SunnO))), Boris, Mastadon), mainstream pop, jazz, world music, classic rock and folk/country (and not in any sort of ironic way).
- I dont like anything ironically. I genuinely enjoy all the music, films and books that I praise.
- I come from England, where even though hipsters do exist (some of my friends could easily score a place on Look at this fucking Hipster), they do seem to have a different flavour to the stereotyped American hipster. There seems to be very little scorn for non-hipsters.
-I rarely get drunk, don't take drugs, don't own any vinyl.

My brother calls me a dirty hipster but he's even more of a dirty hipster than me. He has 8 1/2 on his PS3, for crying out loud.

Am I a dirty hipster because I own a Bastardino Simone Legno Tokidoki vinyl figure because I saw an interview after he emailed me back (I emailed him about design school advice once, ah youth) where he said Bastardino is his favorite Tokidoki character?
Am I a dirty hipster because I try to make new anime fans aware of this crazy, pre-Miyazaki man called Osamu Tezuka who allegedly, among other things, created Astro Boy?

So a hipster is basically an indie kid with a more offensive entry on urban dictionary and the metal/rap fans still hate them. Okay, good to know.
