Ah, the clown. One of the oldest and and most classic comedy characters. As an appreciator of comedy, I've recently begun thinking about clowns and how among most people I talk to online or off, a lot of people dislike clowns. But lately I feel like people say they dislike them only because they feel they must, to be "cool." I should know, I used to be the same way until I began to question why I didn't like clowns. I'm sure some have valid reasons for disliking clowns, but surely it can't be THAT widespread.

Clowns are professional comedians as much as any other kind. They put in the hours, they learn the tricks of the trade, they suffer the humiliation of a bad show, and I think it's high-time we began to respect clowns once again! Enough with the monster clowns! Down with the zombie clowns! Forget the sexy clowns! Please-God-don't-even-mention the "gangster" clowns! They are just perversions of a truly timeless act! Remember: clowns are people too, and you can't really fault someone for trying to spread smiles.

Now I'm just gonna wait and see how long it takes for someone to post a picture of "It." Because come on, it'll happen no matter what I say.

EDIT: And like 10 seconds after I post this, I already have four votes saying they aren't funny. Who hurt you people?

*points to his avatar* I'm love Clowns, especially ones of the Insane variety that come in a Posse.

In other news, I'll go ahead and leave this here:

Is that all clowns are good for these days? To be subverted? It feels like there are FAR more examples of gross, creepy, evil, or otherwise non-clown clowns in media today than not. And that's a real shame to me.

Can I vote love 'em so goofy AND especially love 'em so creepy?

Scary terrifying clowns like the pint sized slasher thing from fallout are awesome. The break between what the clown's face is saying (looking happy) while doing something creepy or bad is horrifying. I love it!

Not sure why, just like that controlled sense of fear.

It's probably why I also love Majora's Mask and some Horror games so much.

And as for the goofy clowns, I love me some stupid as shit jokes xD

It's great.

I'm not scared of them like some people are, but I just don't find them funny or entertaining. If anything, they're just annoying due to their usual persistence in not being entertaining or funny while refusing to leave you alone.

I'm okay with clowns; I've just never met one that was genuinely funny or thrilled with what they were doing.

Put me down for "usually incredibly creepy and unfunny". I can tolerate them but they creep me right the fuck out.

You might want to add a few words to this post, because the mods usually don't like it when people just post a pic. And just to be clear, it's a very good pic. Very suitable. my sentiments exactly.

Don't care for em one way or the other. I live by a relatively large tourist trap and in driving distance of a Shrine circus so clowns are just kinda something that's always in the ether. I did make my niece watch IT when she was 6 and has a phobia of clowns even now that she's 17. I try to instill one good fear in any child I see, it's kinda my thing. Let them watch that scary movie their parents hate and see what develops the following morning. I'm not cruel though - Jurassic Park for the toddlers, Saw for the pre-teens with variations of grotesquitude in between.

I am not bothered one way or the other about clowns to be honest, I don't find them particularly funny, because I don't find slapstick funny in general, but I find them relatively harmless.

Well most the time they aren't funny. I'm not much of fan of slapstick which is what are lot of them do. The ones at the Circ du Soleil show I saw were fairly good. I didn't find all of their stuff funny but some of it was. Not enough to make split my sides or anything but entertaining enough.

Not that it matters since most of time they are intended to entertain children.

I am indifferent toward them since I have never encounter them in their naturally enviroment (I never been to a circus). The only one I have encounter was the one that entered to my parent chip shop. (I wonder if that guy was annoyed that he just wanted his fish and chip and the owner got his son out to meet him?)

Pretty much.

I think the only reason I have any kind of aversion to clowns is because their face is obscured so it makes me slightly wary of them.
To be honest, I actually feel sorry for clowns more than anything else.
So many people hate them and/or are afraid of them.

I could never see the hate for clowns outside of "coulrophobia", in which I don't have... I mean, unless that one clown at your birthday party was a total dick/asshole to you, your friends, and even your parents, clowns don't deserve the hate in general...

With that said, I have nothing for or against clowns in general... and I have only this picture to prove how neutral I feel about them:

I personally prefer the ones that subvert the normal clown tropes for varied effect. Not just horror.

I don't think I've ever actually seen a traditional clown in the flesh.

Maybe once when I went to a circus as a kid. But the memories are fuzzy and I was way too busy looking at the tigers and elephants.
