If you had a choice, would you prefer a silent protagonist like Link, or a generic character with a voice like Dead Space 2 - not horrible voice acting, but nothing special. Escapist, which do you prefer?

Those are our only options? What about characters who's responses we can more-or-less control, like Shepard, or characters with broad and heavily-established personalities like in JRPGs?

It really depends on the voice acting and the setting

In Dragon Age 1, it worked well that my character didn't speak, but in a game like Mass Effect, I prefered the VA.

Also, not much of a fan of Link, as to me he just comes of as bland.

Depends on the game, really. Either method can work perfectly as long as it's well done and it fits the game.

What really grinds my gears is when a developer themselves can't decide (or purposefully doesn't decide so they can weakly play on both sides of the fence). They go through the process of defining a character from visual design all the way to cementing how others in the world react to/interact with your very set character.. but then make the character a mute in a rather blatant and silly attempt to pretend "the character is you!"

Any personality is better then no personality. The idea that people need a hollow shell to project into is wrong. People will arrange characters how-ever they like (look at fanfiction) so long as there is something to latch onto.

Not a wonderful range of choices in that there poll.

I generally prefer my protagonists characterised, which doesn't necessarily mean silent but equally doesn't mean the sort of generic lump.

Commander Shepard, the Lone Wanderer, Gordon Freeman, the Master Chief. They're all characterised (and I like three of the above quite a lot), and yet they're not all silent.

Just because they're characterised does not automatically mean generic, and just because they're silent doesn't make them better.

Shaken, not stirred. BA-DUM-TISH

In all seriousness, I prefer someone with a personality, usually, even if it is generic. I only prefer a silent protagonist if I'm viewing the game from first-person.
