So Escapists, how do you read "lol" ?
What does that little voice in your head say whenever you come across "lol" ?

Personally, I read it as "lawl" but my best friend says it is "el oh el".
My mom reads it as "laugh out loud" and my dad doesn't really use the computer at all to know what it is.
Its not a big deal, I am just curious.

Feel free to comment on any other kind of abbreviation like (and not limited to):
lmao, rofl, wtf, gtfo, etc.

I just read it as it looks, "lawl" was the closest poll option. Same with lmao and rofl, but with wtf and gtfo I actually say the words in my head whilst reading it.

lawl is the closest, but I put more stress on the o, so it comes out like 'lole' (rhymes with 'pole')

Yeah, I am the same.
I very very rarely "laugh my ass off" or "rolling on floor laughing", and thats usually to explain to someone that doesn't understand what they are.

Saying "wtf" and "gtfo" as single words would sound weird as hell.
Whatfffff?
Git-fo?

*insert arbitrary numer of internets you have just won*

OT: I say it as in "lollipop". Lawl sounds like you're having a stroke while saying it, and l o l makes you seem like someone who's just discovered texting or thinks they're initials for a new chain of gardening shops.

Although I read wtf as what the fuck in my head. Basically, my head seems to censor any non-swear-word abbreviation.

Also, wheres the good captcha gone?! I temporarily had the version you could actually read, now I'm back to the gibberish...

I generally read it as "lawl", but with stuff like "WTF" and "GTFO" I usually say the letters of the abbreviation ("Double-you Tee Eff", "Gee Tee Eff Oh", etc.).

Phonetically (lawl). If people capitalized it more often I might do it by letters like I read other anagrams.

When I see "lol" I see it as "el oh el", when I read "lul" I see it as "lull" and when I read "lawl" I read it as "lawl"

I think it's the only system that makes sense.

EDIT: and when I see "gtfo" or "wtf" I read it as "get the fuck out" or "what the fuck"

I actually read it as "loll", because that's the way you'd read it in Sweden. Where I live. Because I'm Swedish.

So do I. Exactly as in lollipop.

Also: In Dutch, the word "lol" (pronounced as in "lollipop") is synonymous with the English word "fun".
So basically, that's why I prounounce it like that.

I always read it as "lawl" or something similar to that since I cant really describe the sound the voice in my head makes when he reads "lol" but I think "lawl" is as close as i'll get.

I'm old enough to remember when "LOL" stood for "Lots of Love", so that's the first thing that flashes through my mind when I read it, then I recognise it as "Laugh out Loud" and read it as a rather smug "Ha Haa" (like Chuck White from American Dad), especially when people write it at the end of their sentences despite there being no obvious joke or humour.

Hahahahahaha. Brilliant.

OT: I read lol phonetically, like pole. As for lmao, I read the letters (el em ay oh) at the same time as reading the words. So I don't really do one or the other, I kind of do both. As for others, I read the words that the letters stand for (like what the f**k, for the win, quoted for truth, etc)

I read it as lol, I had never even thought to pronounce it until I saw something that said "lawl" a few years after I first saw lol.
As for lmao, rofl, wtf, gtfo.
