He literally eats the matter in front of him, and according to basic physics all matter moves to areas of lower resistance.

Essentially Pac-Man is a giant particle, moving in the most logical path... whatever area lacks matter; therefore directly in front of him.

He has to be flying just like the ghosts. If he was hovering, he wouldn't move at all as hovering is floating above the ground without lateral motion. When you add lateral motion, you are no longer hovering, you are flying. He can't be gliding as then he wouldn't be able to make the sudden changes of direction that he makes. The other stuff sounds like technobabble from Star Trek or something which I doubt the makers of Pac Man had in mind.

Besides, ever see the Pac Man cartoons in the 80's? He and the rest of the pac people flew.

Telekinetic powers that is fueled by the orbs he eats. But because of the energy needed to move he must constantly eat. The same orbs are used by ghosts and this is why they always try to eat pacman.

On topic, I think the game is a top-down view. Pac-Man is just a large bannana pie that is constantly losing a slice, and is carried by ants. But the slice regenerates like some strange bannana amoeba.
