After all the debate about MW2, and servers, etc, I don't want to make this about that one game, but I'm wondering just how important it is to most players.

Now I'm not talking about the 2 main games I MP on, TF2 and WOW, as they don't really have a single player mode ( tho I tend to quest alone a lot in WOW anyway ).

However, looking at recent games I bought, GTA4, Saint's Row 2, Painkiller Gold, all have multiplayer and I've not even glanced at the options screen for it, never mind played it in MP mode.

I also picked up Mass Effect and STALKER but I don't even know if they have multiplayer yet.

Just wondered how much gaming time people spend with others or solo, and how much a multiplayer mode adds to the value of the game.

single player is still paramount unless i'm buying specifically for multiplayer because one of my friends plays. the only reason i bought the orange box for ps3 was because one of my friends has it.
the only time i play resistance 2 online is when i can split screen with one of my friends, i've barely played gta online and lament the fact that most developers are letting split screen go.

i'm really looking forward to borderlands for this reason - split screen with one of my friends.

i couldn't care less for such things as COD4 multiplayer - i've never played it and not looking to buy it.

but OT: i buy games for single player. if they have a great multiplayer, its a bonus. but i'd go the story of bioshock over 10 multiplayer experiences like COD.

I personally prefer single player games with the option of multiplayer (preferably splitscreen), as opposed to the tidal wave of multiplayer games with a single player portion stapled on.

In the case of most games, I enjoy having a multiplayer option, but need a good single player to make it worth while. Exceptions to this are games like Battlefield or Team Fortress - these are games designed completely for multiplayer, after all.

In the case of MW2, I'm annoyed deeply at IW for gimping the PC multiplayer, as I hate the control schemes on the XBox - so my natural choice for platform would be the PC. But now the multiplayer has been rogered up the backside, so now I have to pick between the best singleplayer experience with an almostly certainly poor multiplayer, or a decent multiplayer with an ok singleplayer.

Well, thanks to xbox lives rep system I have loads of avoids from people sore about me beating them in CoD4. (Still 5 stars though, wtf is the point of the rep system?)

How can I tell? They all have the reason as "trash talk", this is unlikely true, as i dont even own a mic.

CoD4 is the only game on xbox ive ever played with strangers online, all the rest ive played with friends. (You try getting 15 friends to all be online at the same time for a game!)

Completely depends on the game. To me, an FPS is as much as an online game as an MMO. The single player campaign is more of bonus I get for buying the game. I do not buy single player only FPS games ever. I play FPS games to kick ass with my clan and to compete with others across the globe. Therefore, no dedicated server = deal breaker. (example: Battlefield 2142)

For any other game on the planet besides MMO's, I buy for single player campaigns, and any multiplayer elements are just extras that I will most likely never use. (example: Any Command and Conquer)

The 'craft series of games are an exception, in which both multi and single player elements are extremely important.

wow, your poll is biased as hell, there isnt even a spot saying "I like Multiplayer", its all i dont like it or i can't set it up. I said ts just a bonus, well because i had no other good option. Being a console gamer multiplayer is kindof a must for me since there arent many good single player games. I'm 50/50, I love single player but multiplayer can be so fun and it exponetialy extends the life of a game. I have to say i spend more time on multiplayer though, better face a real person than shitty AI.

I don't frequently have people over to play games often, so if a game banks too heavily on multi-player and the single-player game suffers as a result, that's no good to me.

Furthermore, I *hate* it when multiplayer games do not have a local multiplayer option. I dislike playing online, but I do really enjoy playing games with friends. Burnout was such good times over beer and chips at my buddy's place, until Burnout Paradise came out and disallowed us from playing each other.

The only single player games I've bought this generation are Mass Effect and Bioshock. Multiplayer makes up about 95% of my gaming time.

I'm certainly not opposed to single player games, but I only buy the ones that are generally considered well above average. Single player games are usually better as rentals unless they're super huge like Mass Effect.

I treat multiplayer as more of a bonus to increase the amount of content there is to enjoy. But most often, my primary enjoyment will come from singleplayer.

For me it depends on the game genre. First person shooters are always great with multiplayer, cod4 on the xbox 360 was one of the best online games I have played. Warhammer online is simply epic when you play with large guild or alliance warbands using vent, playing it alone or single player questing is boring and you cant really acomplish much on your own. Its designed for playing with other people though playing alone is a massive waste of your time and money.

Real time strategy games annoy me when I play them in multiplayer, dont really know why I love them to pieces I just dont play them online at all. Some of the few I have played online were red alert 2, which was good enough if I'm honest but I generally preferred playing skirmishes with people against stupidly hard enemies.

I suppose I prefer playing fps's because when you meet somebody thats alot better than you (tends to happen me alot :/ ) you can just wait a few minutes/seconds and respawn. In an rts you have to start the entire game again, and you generaly know playing rts's online who's going to lose or win within a short time.

Single player is what draws me to games, multiplayer is nice to extend its life but I get bored of it eventually. On that note, I despise Multiplayer achievements.

The only online multiplayer games i've played more than once are Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield heroes. The former doesn't raise my interest anymore and the latter keeps losing connection mid-battle. I don't understand how game reviews faff about multiplayer so much these days. For me it is the definition of repetition. Even in TF2 where there are... oh wait, how much classes were there? 12? I don't remember. But with each class it's always the same, regardless of map or mode: you spawn, run, shoot at anything that can be harmed by your guns and then die. The former happens usually within the space of 5 to 30 seconds.

On the whole, I couldn't give a flying shit about multiplayer-heavy games with a tacked-on single player (cough cough ODST cough). It's not something I'm willing to pay 60 bucks for.

Discounting WoW, when I still played, I only ever play multiplayer games during LAN-parties. Single player is most important by far as I'm concerned.

I'd rather have local splitscreen than online multiplayer. The single player campaign is pretty important for me as well.
Multiplayer just extends the lifespan of a game, it doesn't make it (with the possible exception of Team Fortress 2).

We need more of this.

It's the same for us. I haven't touched those two games respective multiplayers.

I have tried to play MP but it just gets boring after a couple of games. There is no story and i really like a story.

Another thing is that MP has no end. I really like my game to have a end so i can go on to another game without feeling bad about it.

I just need closure.
