Well in about 5 billion years or so the sun will run out of fuel. Amongst the various unpleasant phenomena that happen to a dying star of this kind, it will expand to somewhere out around Jupiters orbit (from memory). That ought to do the trick quite nicely.
If, on the other hand, you mean how will human life on Earth be wiped out, it will always come down to human stupidity - whether that's fucking around with things we're better off leaving alone, someone pressing the red button, or simply investing all our money in killing each other then having nothing practical to use when a big old asteroid comes lumbering along, it will always come down to our collective stupidity.

I think it will be caused by zombie over run major cities, because of all the stupid people believing the world will end they become engulfed by their own stupidity, and with majority of the world being stupid. It'll turn into a pandemic of stupid, and they sorta act like zombies.

Also that Mayan calendar thing has been dis-proven so many ways even in jokes it's super irritating to hear about.
Super solar flares? Well every 11 years the sun reaches a solar maximus and we're in that peak now, but we survived the previous 11 years, and the 11 before that and that so we're safe.
Planet X coming in and breaking EARFF? We'd see it coming.
So therefore, the end day will be so lacking in excitement and good game releases everyone will drop dead of boredom. Even the Mormons

OT: Honestly, I think if the world was going to end it would be because of something massive and beyond our control, like a meteor. And even then, in order to completely end civilization, it would have to be a pretty nasty one.
The world ending or the planet being destroyed? If society changes (and we all know it needs to change as soon as possible) then the "civilised" world will in fact end and begin anew. But I don't think anything is going to destroy the planet or make it inhabitable for humans anytime soon.
Dimethyltryptamine or DMT is a psychedelic drug naturally produced by every living thing. Honestly, as far as I am concerned... I either want complete and utter surprise with no warning whatsoever, or just a mild cataclysm that presents at least a chance of survival.
If I am do die... Just make it quick... dont make me suffer the agony of waiting for it.

What follows after that is pretty much of no concern to us, as the red giant is highly probable to just swallow us whole, some time after all liquid on the planet has boiled up and evaporated. Earth will probably look a bit like Mars does now. A shitty and unwelcoming place.
