2010 was below average.

The great years were near the turn of this millenium.

- God of War III has shown it's no where near the top-tier beat'em up games, Bayonetta completely spanked Kratos's ass. The first God of War was great because everything was done well. You actually cared for the story and you had steak in the characters. Kratos is now just some angry guy killing people. The story and characters now suck and all you have left is sub-par gameplay with good graphics.
Just want to point out that Bayonetta/God of War doesn't really say that Bayonetta is better just due to the fact that they are very different gameplay styles. Bayonetta comes off an action fighting system near Devil May Cry: A acrobatic, over the top, shoot-em-up, combo style. God of War is the other side of those action games where it isn't too much about style, it's more about killing things. It also focuses more on fighting many opponents over fighting several.

Also, can't let you off without just pointing out while sure GoW3 doesn't have a fighting system you liked, a blank main character, and a kinda dumb story, did you not notice the SCALE? I mean you fight enemies on top of a another giant character that moves. Twice. And once you fight a giant water beast that actually looked like a water beast and not a blue thing. Maybe It's just because I appreciate technological advances more in games but I got to mention that.

It was really the most technologically advanced graphics and character modeling/physics I think are in any game yet.
I like GoW's fighting style, I love the first game. The series just hasn't gone anywhere since then in the gameplay department. Castlevania evolved GoW's fighting system with the light and dark magic mechanic, the focus gauge, better QTE kill system, and better blocking. Castlevania has some issues with the hit detection and enemy attack animations not being much of a tip off, but it at least went in the right direction. The story and characters in GoW have just gone way downhill and the gameplay just can't carry the whole show. Yeah, the graphics are great; however, using a fixed camera allows for better graphics than having a user controlled camera. And, GoW does do the epic stuff great. The GoW series never had top-tier gameplay but it did everything really well and you really got pulled into Kratos's world in the first game, and that's what I expect from a GoW game, to do everything well, but not be the best at anything (well, maybe scale). Bayonetta also had some pretty good scale and epicness, not on par with GoW but pretty damn good.

Halo: Reach, Dead Rising 2, Red Dead Redemption, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Mass Effect 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Super Meat Boy, Sonic Colors, Minecraft Beta, Pokemon: Gen. 2 remakes, Pokemon: Gen. 5, Limbo, Kirby's Epic Yarn...

Yeah...not too bad of a year. Especially if you like platformers

The one game veryone keeps going nuts over, Black ops, is just not as good as it should of been. Then again, I keep expecting somethign as good as CoD:4 and WAW.
