so, i just played Ico
and i remember why i hate exposition so much.

some games take their stories way to seriously and i just want them to STFU. (i'm looking at you, Hideo Kojima)

i liked playing a game that was a nice simple game.
i liked Ico.

EDIT: EXPOSITION =/= STORY. exposition is flat-out telling you stuff that you'd figure out anyway or stuff that probably doesn't matter.

tl;dr
i like 'playing' video games, not sitting around while characters yap about things i don't give a fuck about. i'd rather leave those details up to the imagination or have to figure them out on my own.

It all depends on the game. I had no problem with the MGS exposition. And I loved ICO and SofC. But then again, some things... No thank you.

...What's ICO?
If you're using abbreviations, tell us what they mean.

If you buy the games for the action and not the developer's stories you might just want to get the demo and play it over and over, the cutscenes and characters "yapping" set the scene so you're not just mindlessly killing whatever falls into your crosshairs.

I buy games for the story, and have just finished Dragon Age, not skpping a single cutscene.

As for you "Read a book then" option, that's just plain ignorant. I read a book to be told a story, I play a game to experience the story firsthand as one of the characters.

I never have a problem with exposition when the story is good.
But in some cases it's atrocious.
I'm looking at you Tekken 6.

As long as the exposition's pretty (and hopefully a video) then I like it.

If it's a novel's worth of text then DAMN IT TO THE PITS OF HELL!

And I watched them all. Just rolling around in the exposition! But that's probably because I loved the story.

Games are a story, just like any book or movie. If you don't want to get a story and just want action, watch B movies, don't read books, and play flash games.

I've also used this joke before, but it's almost like you're saying that forests are too fucking green and water is too damn wet.

You may hate exposition, and that's fine and dandy, just go back to your Call of Duty.
I'm going to leave and play a game that's intriguing.

Sorry, but are you serious?

ICO is the first game by the guys who did Shadow of the Colossus and the upcoming Last Guardian.
Yes, I am serious. I've never played either of those games or owned a Playstation, being a PC gamer, so much of the PS2 games passed me by which explains my ignorance in this subject area.

No.

Leave the exposition, if you don't want story go play Gears of War or some other generic space marine with huge necks.

YOU'RE part of the reasons why good stories in games have declined to the extremely generic and predictable OR mixing up twists with good story telling "plots".

If you don't want the story then go buy a storyless game. Or if you want a game with story, don't complain about it as you can "Skip" the cutscenes(Most of the time) with what ever button does that.

Heesh. >_>

[sup][sup] I really like my stories in games as such this post is biased.[/sup][/sup]

Am I the only one who came into this topic with no idea what 'exposition' was? I'm still not sure. Is it simply another way of saying cutscene?

it's not that i don't like stories, it's that i hate it when the game HAS to explain EVERYTHING. and it's more fun if it leaves details up to the imagination.

Oh, didn't know you to be a PC gamer.

Anyway, ICO is a fantastic game about a young boy sent to die in a forbidden castle and finds a princess and its just basically about him saving her.

Shadow of the Colossus is better in my opinion. Its about a guy (only referred to as wanderer) who tries to revive his girlfriend and as a sacrifice, he has to kill 16 colossi. The whole game is just defeating 16 bosses. It is the true definition of epic as seen here:
