Ok, before I start THIS IS ONLY JUST AN IDEA, please don't message me saying "But if this feature is so great why is never in any games?" Why? Because I just thought of it now.

Ok, my idea is to record your voice to use as your own character. For example games like Dragon Age: Origins, KOTOR, and many I may have forgotten have your character say something but only in text. I recently thought about it, and kinda hoped someone in the gaming industry would see my idea, and maybe use it in a new game (Extremely Unlikely). But I've thought maybe like have a secret feature in the character customization screen (only unlocked after you beat the game, to avoid spoilers) to record your lines like for example:

It would show the line, and you'd say something in that kinda area like, if it said "Yes, I understand.", you could say something "Yeah, Yeah, I heard ya.", I know it sounds confusing at first but maybe after the next twelve times you read it maybe you'll understand. I just want to know what everyone has to say about my idea.

sounds like allot of work, both for the developer and the consumer, theoretically its a good idea, but in praxis it wont work and even if they made it possible only a small part of the consumers would even bother, so tons of work for a small group being just a little more satisfied.

Would be pretty awesome, but seems like an awful lot of effort, especially if you only hear it on a second play through.

saying that I'd still do it.

It's alot of work, needs a mic and it doesn't really add much to a game. Besides, I thought most people find it pretty awkward to hear their own voice being played back, I do... XD. So all in all I'm along the lines of "meh".

PS; don't mean to bust your balls here but I'd appreciate it if you'd spend just a little more time on writing a post next time, I had some trouble trying to get what you were saying.

Eh, what would be better is to allow the player to awnser through speech. Like have the options on screen, and the player just says one of them.

Baulder's Gate allows you to import custom sound packs into the game. These sound packs consist of a folder containing wav files that are played when ever certain events are triggered. Events like, acknowledging orders, acknowledging attack order, indicating character is at half hit points, ect. Nothing is stopping you from importing your own recordings. However eventually you get tired of hearing the same battle cry, especially if it is made in an annoying high pitched whine.

I have wondered why this hasn't been done. If you can get the player to say a small excerpt, you could simply splice all of the syllables necessary to create the character's voice. Using this, you could also get the game to refer to the player by name. I think it'd be nice.

You say that, but they had that option in Diddy Kong Racing DS and it was hilarious to toy with!!

For about half an hour...

(Although my impression of the genie sounds even more hilarious in poor quality sound bytes: "Abra Kadabra!" "Would you like me to help you further?" "Goodbye for now!")

I don't think that is possible, a game can't produce spoken dialogue with just one sample of your voice. And if the game wanted you to SPEAK every line when in dialogue it wouldn't be so great because you are speaking and not your in-game character.

Plus I doubt that Revan or my exile character would sound so great with my voice in KOTOR 1 and 2, so I doubt it would work in any other game.

it has it´s charm but that´s it, just a charm, plus some people (like me) sound silly when recorded when the voice is fine RL and it´s more busy work for something that a profesianl voice actor beats with ease.

so yeah I´m suspecting it´s not in a game because it has no appeal, sorry to sound blunt but not all ideas are good.

I hate the sound of my own voice. Which is funny, because I was a radio dj for a semester and subjected the general public to my voice.

I'm just thinking of how complex this would be to implement. It's not something you'd want the player to do right off the bat, at least not for anything but casual dialog responses...because then lines that need to be recorded are potential spoilers. And if it was a game with cutscenes...

it's a fun gimmick. but i don't think it would work for a few reasons.
1. what you say would probably not match right with what npc's are saying, leading to bad dialogue, or it would lead to you saying a bazillion lines before you get to play.
2. you sound the same every damn time you say yes. that gets REALLY annoying after a while.
3. I'd hear my telephone voice. not my real one. my telephone voice is horrible. I'm really REALLT embarrassed when I hear a recording of my voice....
so, no. sorry.
however... It's an original idea. on the internet no less! and that's always a good thing. so keep thinking original stuff, maybe next time you'll hit the jackpot. but be sure to patent it first if you do ;)

Baldurs gate for the PC has something like that in it....

Although... if you really wanna hear yourself, just say the words outloud as you play... sure you might look a bit odd to the people around you but what the hey, our playing a game, you shouldnt really care what other people think

In singleplayer it wouldn't work, I hear my own comedy remarks and curses all the time.

But nice idea though all the same.

While, I, myself find my idea to be a good way to add to the aspect of customization (my opinion BOOYAH!), I respect one rule: Majority Rule.... So if you read the above comments you'll find yourself at a thought being "Do I really want to add this? Maybe I should consider the time I put into my game, and one feature some internet person came up with.", So I'm saying you can take this idea with my thanks for considering an idea that I came up with... and I respect the fact you are currently in development of a game, that might even be something I'd be willing to invest time with. Oh, and if I may ask, what is the current title of your game, and if I may get a brief summary of it. Maybe me, and those people that actually come across this thread, may get hyped up for it. Sorry for using big, words.... the internet made me do it.

Ahhhh nooo.
All of the dialogue possibilities would cause a lot of work for the player, and I for one, don't play games to practice voice acting. I play them to relax.
