I've gotten into arguements about this question, I've checked it on the net lods of times, and even the best scholars fight about the answer.

What does the Escapist Community think?

If a Tree Falls in the forest, and noone is around to hear it fall, does it make a sound?

Now this is an Edit, before you immediately say "yes of course it does" here is the Link to the Definition of Sound, please look at it http://www.thefreedictionary.com/sound

Obviously it makes a sound. There is no spiritual, religious, wishy washy arguement that can combat the fact that it makes a sound

Do they really still argue about that? That's stupid. Sound is vibrations in the air, whereither they're picked up or not, a falling tree will still make those.

...Yes, it does.

In fact, there's no argument against it.
Only the "but you can't prove it!" bullshit.

This.

I believe I had a blog post on this once.
Let me find it.
Here it is;

Myself said:
Yes. Whether or not there is a human around, vibrations are still made. Critters, ants, buts, animals, birds, might all still be around to hear and feel the tree falling.

Stop trying to sound intelligent with your philosophical bullshit that's had the same answer for years. People keep trying to look smart by spouting these outdated questions that supposedly have multiple answers when it really doesn't. They ask these things to try and distract people from their hidden idiocy

Same as everyone else. Sound is vibrations. Vibrations are always going to happen. Always.

My philosophy professor actually argued that sound and vibrations are different by connotation only. He says that's where the argument could possibly hold water in the other direction (it does not make a sound). I will say I must agree with him on that note.

Lol, I havent seen other posts on it yet, but my bad if there is.

I'm not trying to sound philisophical or something, I'm just wondering. Anyone who thinks this is just some kiddy question, google it.

I'd also like to mention that if the tree hits a mime, no-one cares.

(/obscure?)

Isn't that like old and already proven ?
Well it's stupid to even prove so whats the point, we aren't philosophers we are just simple people.

See, the problem is people dont think before they post, everyone is saying "yes of course" but sound by definition is vibrations that someone hears.. look it up.

So again, if noone is around to hear it, is it a sound?

I say no

Yes it does. The real question is, can you clap with one hand?
I'm doing so right now! (Although the question becomes anal if you can only define 'clapping' as the action of moving your two hands together rapidly to make a noise. You can make a light clapping noise by slapping the fingers on one hand against the palm of the same hand.)
