I want to know who voted for "No" since that makes no sense.

Of course it makes a sound.

We know that when things fall, they make a sound. So, by saying something has fallen, we can say with certainty a sound was made.

To be honest if people are going to pull this question out, stop trying to prove whether or not the tree made a sound.

PROVE THE TREE WAS EVER THERE!!!

But in my opinion IF said tree DID indeed fall over, the kinetic energy it used falling down would HAVE to be converted into SOMETHING. That SOMETHING would most likely be sound.

I will answer your question with another,
If a tree falls in the woods, and theres one man around to hear it, but the tree falls on that man and kills him, does the man dying make a sound?

I think the real question is, "if a man says something and there is no woman around to hear it, is he still wrong?"
Best one yet.. must keep thread ALIVE!!!

Well that all depends. Is it falling through empty space or does it hit something? I mean, it'd be pretty skeptical that it makes any sort of sounds if it doesn't collide with anything right?

Sound always happens. It is the vibrations moving through the air. The slowest of the 3 things you can register it's falling by. The 1st is vision, speed of light being the fastest. The 2nd being the vibrations through the ground, the atoms are closer together in solids than in gases. The 3rd being a sound wave, the atoms being further apart in a gas means the collisions are less frequent, thusly slower moving. If you're close enough it also gives you a pushing force like from a blast which will reach your body the same time as the sound.
Science and logic rules all!!!

...Yes, it does.

In fact, there's no argument against it.
Only the "but you can't prove it!" bullshit.
yes but thats the same argument I get whenever my athiest belifes come up and other peoples gods come into question

but I have to agree tree falling = sound made.

Simple answer: it depends on your definition of 'sound'. As you can define 'sound' to require an observer, the answer is undefined until you define 'sound'. The people who say 'yes' will have a different definition to those who say 'no'.

If noone is around to hear it, it couldn't possibly matter any less whether it makes one or not.

But it does by the way. the laws of physics doesn't stop working when noone is around.

A more interesting question is this

If you're not around to hear it, am i having hot loud sex with your mother or not :p

Sound is perception so the real question is weither or not anything capable of hearing could hear it, i'm assuming nothing thatcan hear is close, so the answer is no

Scientifically it doesn't. Without something to receive the sound waves, a noise is not actually made. The waves are, but without something to gather the waves and convert them to noise (ie. ears) it is just energy, not sound.

Well, since sound is just our description for shockwaves and other such energy, I would say... of course it makes a sound!

Um, it hits the ground? where do you think a forest is? SPACE?!

If no one is around to hear the tree fall, then the earth is doomed anyway, so it doesn't matter. There are always creatures in a wood, no matter how small, so if nothing can hear it, then something is most definitely wrong.

Even if the tree doesn't hit the ground it is still going to make a sound while it breaks and as it falls as the branches rattle together. It's a silly question.
