This is just a funny idea I thought up in another thread. Basically, if by some official statement or capacity, the actual internet and people on it decided to secede from the United States on the grounds that it didn't like to be policed the way the government is trying...what would that be like? This is not a serious topic. This is just a case of me taking the piss out of the political nonsense going on right now. So, hit me with your best shot.

What would the internet be like if it were its own sovereign territory away from the U.S.?

well it would be a weird place to live in. Normally very nice on the outside but with no regulations would have some seriously seedy dark alleys. Yet the nice places would be REALLY nice.

Let's go with Steve Jobs, I'm all up for electing a dead man.
I'm with this one too. With the decentralised nature of the Internet, what better choice than to have a leader who cannot exert any influence whatsoever over the netizens? It would be kinda like the Eternal President of North Korea Kim Il-Sung, minus the dictator son grandson carrying on the legacy.

Sweden. They should be the supreme authority on all matters. Politics, the Internet, Dating disputes, ect. Either that, or some kind of zany computer programme that has reached the singularity. Peace on-line, or robocalypse. Both options sound better than our current system.

The Gestalt.

Admittedly that would result in most policies being about porn, and 4-Chan would be the largest single entity.

The Internet ISN'T a part of the US, it never was. It can't "secede" from anything if it wasn't a part of it to begin with.

Given the essential unchallenged lawlessness which separates the internet from any existing nation, I suggest Lord Vetinari from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels as the best possible candidate for its leader.

Definitely. I want to retract my previous vote and give it to good Havelock!

My god, that's brilliant! If there is one person who could keep the various troll factions and bronies in check, it would be him. I retract my vote (decided by d6 for Gates) and give it to Vetinari. Now all we need to do is devise some way to extract him from Pratchett's brain...

I'd love that kind of leadership. Running the internet, I could abolish trolling!

You sir, are a true genius. Only a man like that could possibly maintain a semblance of control over the internet! As for getting a hold of him, I'm sure we could manage by hypnotising Mr. Pratchett to bring out his inner Vetinari!

Think about it: He could keep piracy in check in the same way he keeps the thievs guild in check. Pirating sites pay taxes and any pirate who intends to go solo would be subjected by furious hacking by the pirates guild. Brilliant!

No-one...the internet mostly regulates itself quite well, with the exception of copyright infringement, which could be easily solved by pirate taxes.

Alternatively, me :D

If any of you have read the belgariad of the mallorean I suggest someone like Belgarath mainly because he is a good laugh but if you cross him he turns you into a tree

I would give it to Yahtzee

But, on the matter of secession, what on earth makes you think that the rest of the world would like what you've done to the Net America? I find it significantly more palatable if we simply Cut Americas Internet off from the rest of the worlds Internet. Like a Berlin firewall, except Canada and south america are cool.

You can keep the grave you've dug for yourself, you can't ruin your Internet and then go "Nah, its okay, We'll just move to europe and start again consequence free!"

I'm greatly amused by the fact you're saying that and your avatar is Abraham Lincoln. Thanks for the laugh :D
