Poll: If there was an alternative to Steam, would you use it?

Well...that's pretty much it.

A few years ago, I probably would've laughed and said no. Now...I'm not so sure. Given the amount of shit I've seen going on (Greenlight, paid mods, horrible tech support, the CS:GO gambling saga and especially the fucking apathy of Valve) I honestly don't want to support them anymore.

On the other hand there isn't any serious alternative, is there? The closest we have is GOG Galaxy which, for all its blessings, can't compete with the amount of AAA and indie titles on Steam.

Which brings up the question: would you use an alternative to Steam if one became available?

None of those things effect me as a customer. Greenlight doesn't hurt me, I don't have to buy mods and I don't gamble on CS:GO. BAd tech support could certainly drive me away but I've never had to deal with them.

I would use another service, and I currently do, but they have to offer me something. Lower prices being the obvious one. Or they could simply have games that aren't on Steam. For example, I use Origin because games published by EA aren't available on Steam.

Eh, out of principle I try to use GOG whenever I can, I like CDPR's attitude and would rather support them rather than Steam.
Outside of them though there really isn't anything close to rivalling Steam (And GOG isn't particularly close either). Nothing else comes close to equalling the sheer amount of games on Steam or the sales.

Only if they'd offer DRM-free games. By this point there's no way I'm switching otherwise.

I buy first on GOG myself.

Can't stand DRM, so I can't stand Steam.

Well if we could do library migration and every game were available on both system, yeah probably. I really hate the steam UI, it's pretty much the worse possible experience and really obnoxious to use.

Hehehehe. "Would." How about "have always done, will continue to do so"?
There's plenty of alternatives to steam, just have to realise there's a world outside of what valve and steam offers.

Nope, Steam is the one that all the games are on, and all my friends are on, and I like to see those little popups that say "Your dickhead friend is still playing that same dickhead game that he always plays" and I can say "Hey dickhead! Payday 2 sucks!!"

But if there was one that all my friends are using, then damn right I'm gonna jump ship and use that one

Yeah, I've been using it for as long as I've been gaming, it's called consoles. They're the vast majority of the market, haven't you heard of them?

There are alternatives to Steam.

I dont use Origin because EA is cancer and needs to go fucking bankrupt.

I do have a uPlay account but only because Ubisoft titles on Steam require it, the platform does not have my card details.

I dont have a reason for not using GOG, i just dont go there.

Given that alternative requires you to buy obsolete hardware, forces you to deal with subpar performance on most titles and charges you a subscription fee to play online, it makes Steam look great despite its flaws.

Yes? it's not like you can only buy and play games from one. I'll use which ever one is selling the game I want the cheapest.

The reason Steam has so many indie titles is because they sell any old shit. Most good indie titles seem to end up on GOG as well as Steam, though it's a shame most AAA titles don't.

If it's not DRM-free and it probably wouldn't be, there's be no point in having another Steam clone. Shit, because of the DRM it's now in my interest that Steam stays afloat and I don't wouldn't want to have to worry about the successes of whole bunch of such competing services.

I might bother with another GOG-like service, but I'd probably stay with GOG for DRM-free stuff, because again, even for a DRM-free library, it's convenient to have it remain available online and with all the latest patches applied.

As one of the first replies said, most of their missteps have not affected me very much.
However if Steam breaks, I hope the next service will allow me to import my 'licenses' of all the games I have.

I use the non-serious ones we got now. Not to the extent of Steam, yes, but still, I bought quite a few on GOG and a couple on Origin.

At this point, it's a terrifying thought.

I have hundreds of games on steam. I don't even want to know how much money that is either...

If Steam dies or I go somewhere else, I'll lose all of that. Unless Steam and Valve become a super powerful company forever though, I g uess it's inevitable.
