Poll: If you could pay more for games, would you?

It seems pretty common on these boards to see people saying that games these days are too expensive. That's up for debate but, regardless of which side of that argument you fall on, I doubt many people would complain if games actually were cheaper. One fairly frequent comment seen about games like the Fallout or Elder Scrolls series, however, is that they actually provide so much content that the user would have paid twice as much. It's also fairly common to see someone remark that a cheaper title like, say, Journey or Minecraft is so good that it really should cost more than it's meagre price.

So, if you could pay more for a game than it's initial price, would you actually do so?

If there was sort of a tip system where you could go to the developers site and say "I already really enjoyed the experience you gave me, so here's an extra $20" would you actually use it?

I wouldn't pay more than retail for a game, however, a game that I bought on sale, got for free, or at a lower price through a package deal, I would consider pay the extra up to retail if I really, really loved it. Well...I would if I had the money to do so, anyways.

No, why the hell would I like to give a random game designer my money? I'll never meet them and I don't really care for them thanks for the game and all, not much else I'd expect if they're giving it away.

Probably not but not for the selfish (selfish isn't the right word but I can't think of another word that better describes it) reasons you would imagine...

If I decided to "Tip"...let's just use the game I'm currently on, Uncharted 3. If I decided to tip Naughty Dog for their game, I would have absolutely no clue where this money would go. Is this money going to go to the developers, management, the publisher, the janitor, etc.?

Basically, without the "checks and balances" that a charity would need in order to be allowed to run, I would not trust it enough to hand over my extra money.

Not unless they raised the price. I can't really afford to get games new as it is, and I doubt many other people can at the minute.

If it was a way to pay the dev team directly and optional I would. I pick up most of my games used and dirt cheap and would have no problem giving the people who made it more money after I played and loved it.

No. Games are priced high enough on release as it is, regardless of how much time you invest in it. If they want more of my money from that game, then give me good post-release content which will both give them more money, and give me more game.

The spirit of the question seems to be:

Would you pay on a basis of satisfaction as opposed to fixed pricing?

And personally, yeah. I would.

Lemme give you an example:

Plants vs. Zombies was a game that cost me a single digit of money. IE: Less than 10 dollars.

And I played it for well over a hundred hours. I would've been happy to pay quadruple what I did for the fun I got out of it.

Contrast Alpha Protocol. I got through about 20 minutes before I just rolled my eyes and stopped playing. It cost me 40+ bucks.

Nope.

I only pay release day prices for roughly 3 games a year as it is anyway so the chances of me paying more are slim to none.

The rest I get in sales on Amazon and won't pay over £10 for and, for some games, £10 is generous.

I don't buy DLC and I won't pay £40 for a new game unless i'm 100% sure i'll enjoy it. There is no way in fiery pits of hades I would ever pay more for any game no matter how much I enjoy it.

"Tipping" a developer for making a good game makes zero sense. Thanks for making it and all that jazz but I care nothing for them. I don't tip my ISP and I use my internet far more than I play games. I don't tip the school and they take my kids off my hands 5 days a week giving me a bit of peace and quiet and educating them at the same time. So fuck no would a tip a developer for doing the job they chose to do.

it depends...you really don;t know how much content a agme is going to give you, you can guess but I wouldnt be willing to pay more than retail (which when you think about it, I already so)

I mean I just finished Uncharted..it took around 9 hours which felt kind of short..even for a linear game...not sure I would have paid $80 for that

So that you support them?

In rare cases, yeah I would. Only sometimes, though.

200+ hours on Fallout: New Vegas for 360 and counting. Very rarely would I give extra money, but with this game, I even went and bought it on Steam. Gonna grab the DLC on there, too, once I get a bit more cash.

Yep.

First off very few games are worth the $60 price tag so most games, I would not pay any more for. I LOVE Uncharted and Batman Arkham City but I would NOT give more than $60 for them. However, games like Civilization, or Skyrim, I probably would as I found myself continuing to play them along side games that were being released years later. However, I would only do it as the OP stated with a website where the devs get the money themselves.

Maybe, either if I bought the game used but ended up loving it or if the developer had some sort of really bad deal with their publisher like Obsidian did with New Vegas, where they weren't getting paid per sale. But even in those cases, it would only be if I'd gotten the game cheap, had extra money to spend, and if the money was only going directly to the developer and not the publisher. Otherwise, no, games are already too expensive most of the time.

I'd simply prefer a system where there wasn't any set price for the games at all, and I'd just pay exactly as much as I think the game was worth.

But we can't have nice things, because people would abuse them.
