Heh I think after too long people would start to look like your avatar OP.

Question about it though, would abortion doctors live forever?
Well he actually said kill a PERSON, and somehow i dont think anything with the intelligence of a plant count. That goes for braindead people also. ( i see those as a previous vessel of a person, like a good frame to a good painting when the painting is gone.)
Interesting if terminally ill people count, but i would go with the assassin for goverment road, and if the goverment dont have a Iranian nuclear scientist they want to get rid of in a year - watch out dictators.
Taking a job as the switchguy in a Texas prison might also be a good idea, to bad that means alot of innocents dying also as the US record is less than 100% in frying only guilty people.
That downside also kicks in with joining the military, what is it in Irak ? 300000 dead and almost 10% of them military ?

Nah, i think assassing for goverment might look good, ill take out some mexican druglords for the resume and i am sure they want me...

i would kill Criminal's, they deserve it more then anyone else.

go Death note up in this
This, but not to that extent. See, if you wanted to live forever, you'd have to keep killing. If you're only killing criminals, even for the most minor infractions, eventually crime will cease to exist. That being the case, eventually, you'll run out of criminals to punish.

Also, on that note (no pun intended), with Death Note, I thought up a flaw with its logic. You only have to write down the name of the person and/or the date/time they'll die... but what about people who share the same name? What if there was a perfectly innocent man named Charles Bronson? How would the Death Note distinguish between him and the murderer?
I dunno, maybe I'm forgetting something as I haven't watched the series in forever. Does it say you have to picture that person in your mind as well or something? If that's the case, what id you don't know the face of the person?
Maybe I'm thinking too much into this.

OT: I'd go for immortality, even by this method. As for getting caught, how could they catch you. If you have telekinetic powers, you could use many a method to make it look like accidents. Hell, you could go for a full house by causing 2+ cars to crash and kill multiple people in one go (the bonus for murders would stack, right?)

Personally though, I'd prefer an immortality that DOESN'T involve murder. I'd happily live forever if it was passive (as in I didn't have to do anything... I'd just be immortal. None of this Highlander stuff where everyone else who's immortal will come at me for a chance to kill me despite no personal grudge, etc)
In the anime, you have to have the face of the person you wish to kill at the top of your thoughts. As you said, this is to avoid killing people with duplicate names. If you don't know the face, you can't kill them.

I could learn how to be an assassin and take out gangs... I wouldn't feel any guilt over that, hell I could even be a hero in addition to adding to my own immortality. And if I ever got sick of immortality I could just retire from killing people.

Ah, but I can do this.

Murderers, rapists, child molesters.

They would all fall by my hand. I may be evil myself, but I'm no freak like some of the people out there.

Specially rapists and child molesters. I have no qualms with making them vanish from the world. It would be a better place for all.

So yes, I would take the immortality, and not specifically use it for good. I hate people who go out and hurt others, and I want to return the favor.

I would not go around murdering them randomly, only one per year and I'd probably spend the rest of my time obtaining wealth and power.

I do sound a bit hypocritical though. I'd be like Dexter I guess.

Vigilante justice incoming. I'd be like batman, but I'd have to figure out some other totem animal. Maybe Badgers, they're kinda badass.

I like that this is 50/50. It shows that there is controversy in this topic
I don't see a controversy I see weak rationalization to do a truly evil act. You can say that I am thinking too binary about it and there is a gray place between black and white, but I would say no this is as black and white as you can get. It is truly evil it doesn't matter what those "bad people" have done you have no right to say if they live or die. Be evil if you want to but don't try and say you will be a hero because you are not.

However, there is a catch. To gain immortality you must first murder a person. Every time you murder someone your immortality will be extended by 1 year.

wait, wait wait..what? how does one extend "immortality"? perhaps being impervious to damage or illness, but immortality is a constant.

as for powers, you and i wouldnt have any, assuming we could die by physical means. we'd only cheat death and go crazy counting the ages. besides, nothing survives a star that collapses on itself and rends the solar system a new asshole.

besides, 90 years is immortal enough for me. i dont see myself living forever.

Eventually I'd get jaded enough to do it eternally, just to see how long I'd get away with it. I don't think I'd ever be able to stomach the journey to that point, though.

Wow, the poll is almost 50/50.

So there's nothing stopping me from loading up a bus with pedophiles, rapists, wife-beaters and any other scumbags and pushing them all off a cliff, right? There's no stipulation that says the people being killed have to be be decent, nice people?

<quote=Wikipedia>Controversy is a state of prolonged public dispute or debate, usually concerning a matter of opinion.
Obviously, some people think killing in certain circumstances is ok (or permissible if you want), while some people think killing is not ok in any circumstances. I am of the opinion that there are some people in the world that can be killed for the betterment of society. My criteria of "what makes that person ok to kill?" may be different from others, but it is still there.

Thats what I meant by controversy.

As for your point about black/white arguments, I think that every topic ever has a gray area. The size of that gray area will obviously vary from subject to subject, but I think it is impossible to say "my reaction to this topic will be the same, no matter the circumstances, so the topic is black/white". That gray area is defined by the "well, it depends..." subject matter.

Yes I would. Thanks to todays modern weapons killing a large number of people to increase your immortality is quick and easy.

I don't think I could do that, as much as I love the idea of immortality. I can't justify trading an entire life for a single year. :(

Now, when you say immortality, does that mean i live through almost any damage to my body?

Because if yes, i simply kill 1 person (rapist) and then get myself to North Korea or parts of Africa, and proceed to give myself a couple thousand years of life while still technically being 'good'.

And then i take over the world and set myself up as God King.

Yea, there's quite a few people I'd have no reservations about killing, I get bullied quite a bit a school.

And if I'm tired of being immortal(all friends dead, weary of life), then I'd just stop killing.

Simple, I'd become Catholic, then have a bunch of protected sex...every condom is a few million potential lives I've just flushed down the can, easy guilt free immortality.

Oh hang on, Catholic, eternal guilt about everything!

It would be difficult however, and who could you trust with the information? Also, how can you form long term relationships, knowing that everyone you love is going to die before you.

Sign me up if I can bestow these years on other people, of course :)

I'll happily throw a school bus into a ravine to keep Stephen Fry around for another 50 years, for instance.

Yes. There are plenty of douche bags in the world I would off if I had telekinetic powers. Immortality would just be a bonus.

You'd get caught.
Enjoy spending the next ∞ years in prison.
lolololol

Seriously, it's probably not a good idea to try, no matter what you do, you'd lose.
Unless you become an executioner. Then you win.

I will accept a lot but I will not accept that this in not black and white. This is about if you would kill people to extend your life. Who they are doesn't mater people would be doing this for the benefit of themselves only. Again be a murdering tyrannical dictator if you want, but don't act like you are the second coming of the lord when all you are is Daniel Dravot with real power.

That being said don't try and tell me this is not black and white if I am saying it is you know a believe so strongly that nothing you can say will change my mind. It might be ignorant of me to be that way but I don't care this is good and evil if I ever saw it. If you want to disagree fine, but don't try and argue it with me because I don't see it any other way and I never will.

Meh, fuck it. I'm immortal. I get a fly to Japan, stab 40 people in the chest and then get back to England by walking underwater for a couple of years. Then, after that, Australia. You know, places far from home.

My life means more to me than most people but that doesn't mean I take someone else's.

Everyone has awesome points but there are plenty of people who are innocently convicted of those nasty crimes. I'd hate to have murdered someone and been wrong. Let the justice system have that on their conscience.
