If you can remember the ad then It's effective.

Games often have in game advertisements such as billboards ,posters ,etc.
It's kind of hard to notice these when your zooming past them at 120mph or using your webs to throw enemies against them as spider-man.Or doing other similar stuff

I think they're a waste of ad money unless you do something ridiculous.

Implying other forms of advertising aren't a waste? I dunno about you, but I'm definitely not buying slim jims anytime soon.

We pay no less for a game with ads than one without, therefore they are nothing more than a cash maker with no benefit to us.

I find some of them entertaining. I remember some racing game has an add for a phone company that no longer exists after every race.

Most of the ads I notice are in racing games, but after I see it the first time I pretty much ignore it for the remainder (since I have racing to focus on!)

In other games like GTA4, they had ads for in game products, and I thought those were well done. Since I wasn't flying by them quickly all the time like in racing games, I would actually notice them a lot more and realize what real life product they were parodying.

Other games like Rainbow Six Vegas had AXE ads everywhere. Those were annoying sometimes and could obscure aiming, but it was super fun to shoot them.

Battlefield: Bad Company has a blatant example. There are some billboards in 1 map advertising some Battlefield game, and they are completely indestructible. While you can't trust a normal wall in that game to protect you, these advertisements are completely proof against bullets, grenades, and anti-tank missiles.

As long as the ad is on a billboard or a bus stop I'm fine with them.

I notice them sometimes. If it's cleverly done, then I approve. If it fits the material of the game, then I approve. If it's Commander Shepard smiling down at his new Nike upgrade to his gear, then I don't approve. Shouldn't this stuff be common sense? I never understood why people hate it so much when characters use products in media in a way that people actually use them in real life.

Yes in real life there is advertising, if it is placed in the game world in a manner consistent with real life I'm free to ignore it just as I do everyday of my life.

They honestly don't bother me that much. Developers have to do what they can to keep the lights on and if that means some benign ads in the background I'm OK with it. In some games like the open-world sandboxers and such, they can add a bit of realism to the whole thing. Or in Sports games where the arenas have ads along the stadiums and such.

Now there is a limit though. Ads should be tastefully done and in a perfect world they should update and change over time. For a bad example load up old EA games from the PS2 era sometime and notice how out of place all those old ads for games look strewn literally every few feet. Or one of those games like the Tony Hawk title that had T-mobile ads literally EVERYWHERE. That's just annoying and it has an adverse effect on it's audience.

So keep it tight and true to source and it doesn't bother me. Blatant=Bad in regard to the ads. At least for me.

If the game has city setting where the ads make sense then I have no problem with them since it's a good way for the companies to make some money or in a NASCAR game where the entire time you are driving cars sponsored by companies it's expected. The ones I hate are the ones that I remember from some early disc based console games where as an extra you can find a Nike ad or something like that as an unlockable, those were pointless and definatelty a waste of money.

I only really like fake ads, because those can be funny. I also don't mind ads in games if they're really subtle.
