I think that...

...he never woke up from that time where he went into the dream in that guy's basement after taking the sedative, because he never got the chance to spin his totem after that, so the whole operation was just one big dream inside of another dream.

Dude......Fucking spoilers.....I am so glad I'd already seen it, but Christ.

OT: I think he was in a dream. I just don't think Cobb had what it takes to face his family again after all that time, and guilt.

But there's a chance that this totem doesn't work for him, because it wasn't his totem, it was his wifes. Therefore, the top doesn't mean anything!

I don't think he was dreaming. I heard someone say that if you stayed until the end of the credits it showed the totem stop spinning.

Granted, with omniscience--

He could have dreamed himself waking up on the plane and going home, but it seems like there's no point. He could actually wake up and go home, the previous version of limbo just seemed to be another dream within that dream, so it would make sense that he would have just appeared with his kids if he were dreaming. Because if he chose the dream world over the real world he would have the ability to alter whatever he wished, like he and his wife did in the first form of limbo. So common sense would dictate that he didn't stay in the dream, though I still find the ending to be a dick move.

Why do retards keep asking this? It's like debating whether that trick picture of the woman's back/crone's face is one or the other. The entire point is that its ambiguous, that it could be either one, THAT WE DON'T KNOW.

That was the real genius of the movie I thought, in how they so aptly portrayed philosophy; We will never know the answer, so you better damn well get comfortable with the question.

OK, I know how pretentious this sounds, but you kind of missed the point.

EDIT: I'm too lazy to quote, but the post right below yours and directly above this one sums it up pretty well.

You may want to put a spoiler warning in the topic title so people who have not seen the film yet will know this is about the ending.

In my opinion I think he is woken up from the dream at the end. It shows the totem start to go off balance after a few seconds but not completely fall over.

The top wobbled at the end. If you didn't hear him explain he said that his wife used to spin it in the dream and it always stayed straight and kept going. The wobbling showed the audience that even though his world was now perfect it was still reality.

That guy was bullshitting you, I always stay after the credits for any movie and there was nothing there.

He is not his wife = point invalid

The top was about to stop spinning. It was completely possible for him to wake up.

Also plothole? :

Why did they need to go through the layers of the dream. Waking them up from the last dream would logically wake them up from all of them.

If that was intentional and not a plothole then he definitely wasn't dreaming.

He wasn't dreaming. He could have woken up and gone through the layers, and it looked like the top stopped spinning. The fact that the kids were wearing the same clothes was probably a coincidence for cinematic effect.

Plothole or clue?:

If they woke up from the first dream that should wake them up from all of them. If this isn't a plot hole and was intentional then he's definitely not dreaming.
