My parents like some of the rock and roll, but I'm a bit more punk. It's funny though because we're all parrotheads, unlike my little brother, who thinks he's a gangster.

Lots of different music in my household.

60's mod 70's punk, Bowie and a shitload of 90's electronica. I thank my parents for this.

While I wouldn't exactly say I like it, I definitely respect old-school songs from the 70s and 80s. Rick James, Prince, pre-HIStory Michael Jackson... the good stuff.

Nope cause I listen to everything. None of my folks listen to metal, jazz or progressive rock.

Parents where punk rockers back in the day.
I love me some punk (real punk, not this pop punk BS we have today)

I also picked up Metal from my brother.

None.

My dad hardly listens to music, he likes cheezy 80's stuff.

My mom likes 80's rock and country/western and stuff.

I'm all metal, power, symphonic, heavy, melo-death, folk.

I am the absolute antithesis of my Mother's musical tastes. She has this issue wherein she can not deal with the fact that she is getting older. So to convince herself that she is young, she forces herself to listen to the mass produced, computer generated, corporate garbage that is top-40 music.

I on the other hand, am a die hard metalhead, that also likes some techno(mostly dubstep) I have anything from old school Thrash like Slayer, Metallica(Black album and before), Megadeth, and Anthrax, to Groove Metal like Pantera and Lamb of God, to Deathcore like Whitechapel, As Blood Runs Black, and Suicide Silence.

I honestly try to hide my disgust for her chosen type of music as much as possible, but whenever she feels the need to criticize the music I enjoy, I just find it necessary to say something along the lines of -- "At least the bands/musicians I listen to actually write/play/sing their own music."

Not even close. One liked country and the other liked metal. I like classic rock and smooth jazz. So, no.

I grew up listening to celtic, world, new age, easy listening type stuff, but I'm also really into metal, rock, alternative, pop, etc. My mom always had something playing in the stereo at home when we'd wake up in the morning, and at the framing gallery, and it was all I knew when I was a child. Eventually I was introduced to metal, rock and pop though, and fell in love with them just as much. And of course there's anything on the piano.

I started life with music such as this:

But have since discovered:

Yes, I'm all over the place. >.>

Well, my dad used to play 80's metal for me. It was stuff like Judas Preist, Black Sabbath, Metallica, mostly just the big classics. He also played me a Deep Purple album.

So yeah, I did get a bit of his music taste, but it really changed a lot when I started listening to as much music as I do now.

my dad likes folk so I got into some folk bands (mostly current) that I don't think I normally would of. besides that I've discovered the majority of the music I like on my own

Mine's a funny case, actually. I'm a "classical" musician studying music history and theory in university; this matches up with my parents, both classically-trained professional musicians (well, my father also dabbles in jazz and pop to quite an extent as well). "Classical" music consists of 99% of what I listen to. I've been playing violin (now viola) since I was 5.

And yet, for most of my life, I've had little to no interest in music. I played violin because it was fun and I liked being a musician, but I wasn't very good, nor was I diligent in practising. I rarely listened to music, at least not until I became at teenager, and back then it was mostly the stuff my friends suggested to me (none of these are musicians). I randomly fell in love with the music I play and study the year I got good enough to take part in a (youth) symphonic orchestra, which made me discover lots of amazing music. At the same time, I started playing more difficult but more interesting music... that's where I come from. My parents never had me "listen" to anything and they didn't ever force me to practise hard, because they believed it had to come from me. Turns out it did :)

I listen to pretty much anything, but my dad always had the country playing. He also liked folk though, so while if I hear country I jump from a cliff, I do like to folk.

In Part.

When I was young I didn't like any music, because the music that was played everywhere was Pop music (not only was it everywhere outside the house, but my mam liked it and had it on). Then when I was 10 I overheard my dad's music (Metal) and have loved it ever since.

So I think it was a case of nature over nuture.

My parents were never big into music, but I was obsessed from a very young age.

My obsession formed my tastes. I'm from a small country town in South carolina. Seclusion is the word that describes my life until I graduated high school in 2005. But I grew up listening to punk, punk, and more punk. I spent much of my time in my teens just researching music to find the best punk, to influential punk, everything. So I grew up on The Clash, Minutemen, Bad Religion, Ted Leo, Ramones, Fugazi, and the like. Maybe I was drawn to it because it was so againt what everyone listened to around there at the time. I was always somewhat ashamed to be Southern born, so...

Then I got into college, and my tastes expanded into folk (which very much has the spirit of punk), noise rock, and some bluegrass and rap (I never expected I would like those last two genres). I still dig and dig to find music. It's a rewarding obsession.

I learned to like rock and hate rap/pop/hip hop and all that artificial junk. But I've always enjoyed discovering bands on my own, and lately my tastes have been diverging more from those of my dad (music fanatic)
I think I have always had broader tastes than my dad and especially more than my mom, but we all enjoy a variety. Playing music just tends to expose you to some stuff you wouldn't hear otherwise

So are we INFLUENCED by our parents music choices?

I'm sure subliminally we are. I used to listen to a lot of country cause my mom did. My dad listens to alot of 60-80s rock, so I'll listen to that too.

But while I was growing up and channel/station surfing the tv/radio, I heard Grunge, and then the ninties rock (i.e. Smashing Pumpkins, Gin Bellosums), and then moved into the alt rock of muse. And thats what I listen to now.

So I would say early on, yes, but after I was eight, I made my own music choice and listen to it.
