Games like 'Heavy Rain' 'The Path' and 'Dear Esther' are interactive narratives. They all have been praised and well received. While I'm sure this genre will never replace films. I wonder if we will see a greater number of them in the future, or will they remain a rare type of game that is released only once in a while.

If they become more popular then their sole USP will become a non-USP.

They're something slightly different; we need those sorts of experiments to get innovation in the future.

Yes, I hope so, it's great for an interactive medium to play to its advantages by using interactive narratives.

The only way I think they'll beable to last is if they have an always changing storyline. a game like heavy rain is great the first time you play it but once your done you know everything about whats going on and who was behind the crime. while you can still play and change different things you've done before, it's still end at at basically the same conclusion. It's like playing a C.S.I game, they're great and require you to put effort into them, but once u solve a case there's almost no point in playing it again since you already know where all the clues are and who's done the crime. These games are great to rent, but bad to own and I think the overall slow sales from ppl not buying but just renting it for a weekend would kill it. I do think they'll be great if it was an online style game that always had new quest for you to take on or maybe even player created plots and clue placement to keep the games fresh.

I think Heavy Rain may be as popular as interactive narratives will get. The problem with interactive narratives is that if the story doesn't deliver, then you kind of feel like you wasted your money on the game. Whereas a game with deep gameplay can deliver a good, bad, or average story and still be worth the money. Also, it's kinda hard to tell if you are going to enjoy the story going in (unless you read spoilers) because it's more like a movie and people's enjoyment of movies differs greatly compared to games. With normal games you can get a pretty good feeling of how you'll like the game based on videos of gameplay, reviews, and demos. You really can't demo a story.
