I know as gamers that there are many of us on this forum who find the whole social interation thing awkward, so what does everyone think of internet dating? Would you date someone you met online? Would you join a dating website? And are there any single young guys from England??
If you meet someone online and get on well enought o consider dating then sure, do it.

How Young?

People tend to be alot more open on the internet though thanks to the anoymosity it grants. So a shy guy in person might have an easier time talking to people online. It's a good way to break ice for people who have trouble with that.

As OP, I feel like I should add something more to this discussion (mainly due to arguements between certain users).

First of all (a phrase I have taken to overusing on here but meh), I'm not too worried about what anyone says. If you want to sit in judgement above others, then that's up to you. Just wait until suddenly you're stuck in an awkward situation, and then you have nowhere to turn cos you've already made some pretty strong points.

Secondly, I agree with solidstatemind (another annoying habit of mine, sitting on the fence and agreeing with both sides), that if someone is offended by a post they have a right to air their view even if the OP hasn't objected.

And finally, this was only started as a theoretical discussion, just looking for people's varing opinions. I'm almost 19, single, stuck in rural Gloucestershire with no friends and no chances of meeting anyone my own age other than people I knew at school. And due to certain mental health problems, I doubt any of them are going to get friendly anytime soon. I was therefore looking to see whether other people thought internet relationships were okay, on the basis that it will probably be my only way of getting any interest.

PS (due to the use of the word finally) I apologise that this has turned into an essay. If you have bothered reading this far, congratulations.

I'm 19 next month. So roughly 16 - 21? (Although age wouldn't necessarily be that important.)

I never found being social irl to be all that hard or anything, but why not use internet dating services?, all it does is increase the amount of women/men you have the ability to speak to, heck, i met the girl im currently dating through a swedish internet dating site, and so far so good. ^^

I wouldn't ever join a dating site for the sole purpose of finding someone, but I might date someone I had met online if I knew them well enough.

I think we have an idea for a new forum section here :).
You get to know people by talking, and what are forums but a lot of talking?

Ah, I've been 16 for 4 months now but I'm sure everyone else was asking this question.

I met my partner online. We'd been talking through the internet for 4 years before finally deciding to give it a go (after I made him wait two years for an answer). A month after we flew interstate to meet each others parents he moved up and we've been together for 3 years now. There's nothing wrong with it, you just have to have good judgement of character.

A few years ago I laughed at the concept of online dating but now I've grown weary of trawling through pubs and clubs to find women. The only proper relationships I've had are from chance meetings rather than nightclub meetings, since both parties tend to be drunk in the club and the girls I meet there aren't usually interested for long once my inner geek starts to show through.

Now I'd say that I'm more open minded, so I wouldn't rule out the possibility of meeting someone online but my one condition would be meeting someone in the same city since as a poor student I can't afford to travel the length of the country in order to meet face-to-face.

I am young, single and from England. Chances are slim that you live anywhere near me but new online friends can never be a bad thing so if you did want a chat on email/msn/irc/steam/facebook just drop me a line.

I probably should have added:

I actually talked to my wife on the phone and then flew out to Florida to see her like several times before we actually went beyond interested. I realize that I have a good job that gives me tons of money for flying out to meet people and go places, so that may not be an option.

But like everyone else has already said, you should probably try to meet them before entering a relationship with them. Face-to-face interaction == good. And talk to them on the phone when you can. That also helps you learn a lot about the other person.
