I've been following the stories about the new iPad since before it's launch. I have a fairly solid impression of the new gadget, especially after reading this article: http://news.cnet.com/8301-30684_3-20002079-265.html
But I wanted to hear your opinions. What do you think of the iPad?
My friend gave me one, and it's alright, I suppose.
But that's only if you don't want to use it as a computer. As a cool looking novelty item, however, I'd say it's not bad.

I've not yet picked up and handled one yet, so take this with a grain of salt.
So far I'm intrigued at least on a novelty item basis because as I've said elsewhere I've wanted to see a Sci-Fi-Esque 'DataPad' type device for a very long time and so far this is the closet I've personally see something come.
It's usually about this point people will start jumping up and down hooting "HURR! IT'S JUST A TABLET PC! THAT'S NOTHING NEW!" To which my reply is NO, they are not exactly the same concept, the 'DataPad' I imagine is an exclusively touch-screen based device several times larger than a smart phone and a fair bit smaller than the traditional 'twist around screen' tablet PC laptop.
Is it a good device? Hell if I know, like I said I've yet to even touch one. But that's largely secondary to the fact that my main interest in this device is it's form factor which I've not seen elsewhere.
It is a peice of crap and ANOTHER Apple Market Ploy. I guess it is OKAY if you have lots of money and don't know how to spend it. But an HP Touchscreen Laptop is a million times better.
And the main thing to prove my point is that the Ipad will NOT support websites that use Flash. Hmm.. there goes half the internetz..
Steve Jobs... you are as bad as Bill Gates..
But at least Steve wears a turtleneck to show he is a yuppie.
It's a cool gimmick, but currently it simply has too little useful functionality to fit into any niche that hasn't already been filled by far better products.
I'm not surprised that many of you share my opinions. Yet, clearly there are many people out there that do not, because the iPad is selling quite well. So I want to know:
1) Who is it that's buying these things?
2) Why?
3a) How come these people don't log on to Escapistmagazine.com?
3b) Do they hate videogames and/or the internet? (if 'yes' then go refer to question #2)
won't spend an age starting up, like a cheap laptop.
Smaller and lighter than a laptop.
I like to write on the move a lot.
Looks more fun to watch movies on than a portable dvd player. (but not DVD slot obviously).
I don't want a laptop for gaming.
It's cheaper than a laptop, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say it'll need far less maintenance.
But...
I bet I'll break the screen pretty fast.
I also bet it's pretty painfully on the neck, imagine looking at your lap for an hour, ouch.
The data plans look like a complete rip.
The second gen will obviously be better.
I don't get people who say it's less usefull than a laptop. It looks functional to me, unless your using it for gaming (which I wouldn't really count as usefull, more fun.
