As a piece of hardware it blows the 360 out of the water. If you look at exclusives it comes down to personal preference. If you can find enough games for it that you really want to play, then go ahead and get it.

Yes. As people have said before lots of great game, more games are coming, lots of great exclusives, and the fact that it is a seriously powerful/stable piece of hardware.

I was oh so very close to buying one, but turns out none of the new ones have backwards compatibility.

What the hell sort of a change would that be? Taking features away from earlier versions?
This, definitely.

I hear that the Playstation 2 games that you play on a backward compatible Playstation 3 look a hundred times better as well.
Say what? Source please.

Is that seriously true? I remember playing ps1 games on the ps2 and loving the convenience so that woould be a major plus for a ps3

To me, the main appeal of these next gen consoles are online play, and if your friends don't have it, I would just say forget about it, save your money for games for the systems you have. I don't have a PS3, but I wouldn't buy one if I were you.

There's no game on the Xbox that isn't on the PC or PS3 that I want. But more importantly, the PS3 slim 120GB is going to be 280 Euro around in Ireland, does anyone know what the Original one been cut down to?
The same price I'm told.
to be honest i don't like the looks of the ps3 slims (yes i own a ps3) don't looks as stylish as the normal one if i can be fair. buy the normal one, there is like no difference between the normal and slim (apart from memory and size i suppose)

To switch things up a bit;
Say I have a kick ass gaming PC, a wii and an xbox 360. I also hate playing FPS games on a console to the point where I don't buy them, and I also hate metal gear as well as the final fantasy series. In this case, is the PS3 still worth getting?

A 300 dollar blu-ray player is pretty good with the release of the slim.

The Last Guardian+Heavy Rain+Katamari HD+Blu-Ray player.

I'd say if you're into 3/4 of those things, you're good to go. Plus, there's a whole bunch of adorable PSN games I'm not mentioning, and they're all completely worth it.

the slim is supposed to be more 'energy efficent' if he's paying his own power bill.

Alright, Sold!
Also, I forgot about heavy rain. I LOVED Indigo Prophecy (or Fahrenheit as it was known in Europe) so there's something to be excited about :)

get one espically since they are now as cheap as a 360 pro. Only reason not to get a PS3 is if all your friends have 360's and you don't.

For all the money you pay for a PS3, you get kickass games with top tier hardware and content, Blu-Ray player, free online gaming and 5-20 dollar downloadable classic PS1 games.

considering the failure rate of the 360, i'd have to say that the ps3 is more than worth it and you can update the hard drive with little effort and you don't void your warranty
I agree with this. With the recent price drop, the PS3 is the better purchase.

yes sure, b.t.w moniez? also whit absolutely no respect, your friends must be idiots, if one of my friends got a new console and some good games my first respond wouldn't be "i am going to kill you" but rather "any multiplayer games?", and since you use z instead of s you too are probably an idiot.

So the exclusives are better because you say so? Or am I missing something at this point?

Here where I live (Switzerland :p) PS3 games are also usually 10-20CHF more than xbox games.
Oh and I might just be lucky but I have 2 360's (and a Wii by God I'm not a fanboy D:), and one has been going for 2.5+ years and the other for 1.5+ years, while my PS2 broke after 2 months and 3 of my friends with PS3s all had it break at least once. (one of em had to get it repaired 3 times :/)
But then that's just my experience. Oh and also use one of those controllers before you buy it, I just can't get over the shoulder buttons (triggers or whatever the hell they are, they're uncomfortable and awkward).

Back to my point from my earlier post, I have a lot of barely used PS2 games that I wouldn't mind playing, but peer pressure (hah) is urging me to buy a ps3, and I definitely won't buy both.

I also got to play enough ps3 exclusives over the last few months / year, and I must say I'm glad I chose the xbox. Of course it just depends on your taste, but I had no fun with Killzone 2, Uncharted, MGS4, or Linger in Shadows. While on the other hand, any time we get together for a 3 day system link / general console nerding, we have all consoles available (twice for system link) but we always (even though the ratio of PS3 to xbox guys is usually 6:2) end up playing a hell of a lot more xbox. Then again that's just because PS3 owners around here don't buy many games (so not that many options for system link or split screen in general). We end up playing Wii (or should I say Brawl) more than ps3.

Well I ended up rambling (and using a shit ton of brackets).
Admittedly I can't disprove anything you've said, but I call shenanigans! I find it damned unlikely that of 3 PS3s, a PS2 and 2 360s that every single PS3 and PS2 broke (one of them 3 times, and another in 2 months?), but both the 360s remain unscathed. Even if it's true though, it's hardly a good representative of PS3s and 360s worldwide. If you're deciding between a PS3 and a 360 purely off their failure rate, reason and statisticts would suggest going with the PS3 since the 360 is looking at a supposed failure rate of 54% to the PS3's 10-20 (OK I don't remember exactly, but the numbers on the Escapist were around there-abouts).

Anyways back to the OP I would say sure go for the PS3 (I sound like a horrible fanboy, maybe I am one), unless you prefer a lot of online (specifically with your friends) to the PS3's exclusives then I'd say go with the 360 since it sounds like that's what they have.

Sure, it might indeed not be representative of the entire world, but none of my friends' ps2s broke, that was mine. From 12 maybe more friends with ps3's 3 of them got theirs fixed, one guy had his fixed 3 times. Some others can't play for long periods of time or have to angle a fan at their PS3 because it overheats. From the 5 people with xboxes (I'm included) none of us ever had any problems (and I have 2 of em!), the most was one of them got the overheating sign, but turns out there was (A LOT of) dust blocking the fan :p.

I didn't decide on failure rate (I'm Swiss for Christ's sake we can fix things...) but I decided on the fact that: Xbox came out earlier, and didn't cost: 599 US dollars

Oh and believe me it's true...
