I can instantly pick out the following rock songs...

Helter Skelter by The Beatles
Shook Me All Night Long by ACDC
Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who
Jumping Jack Flash by The Rolling Stones
Rebel, Rebel by David Bowie
and of course...
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

I like to think it's this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C86oH5RwyJg], but sadly I know it isn't.

There are tons, but if I had to pick one, I would go with "More Than A Feeling", by Boston.
Man, that is an excellent song.
Which one?

That's the one I meant. Ever seen Casino? Much like The Game and Jefferson Airplane's "Alice," it's pretty much the absolute best use of that song.

While I wish more people these days had an affinity for the great music that came out of the old era of the British Invasion, I know it's not the case.

I suppose having Queen be more recognizable than the Rolling Stones isn't so bad.

Why not the most recognisable black metal song is Freezing Moon by Mayhem. The most recognisable thrash metal song is Raining Blood/Master of Puppets/Peace Sells. The most recognisable death metal song is Hammer Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse.

Psychadelic rock - Sunshine of your love
Blues Rock - Stairway to Heaven
Hard Rock - Highway to Hell
Space Rock - Space Oddity
Progressive rock - Dark Side of the Moon
Grindcore - You Suffer/Life
Doom Metal - Iron man
Progressive metal - Pull me Under
Rock as a whole - I'd have to say Bohemian Rhapsody

Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to love is very recognizable though I guess it's a different genre.
That said I think smoke on the water or paranoid are more recognizable than BoRhap, but then again we only have meh. radio here and I never really listen so I couldn't tell you the public's opinion.
Journey songs are up there as well though.

GALILEO! I think it's only recognizable by the people who adore Wayne's World. Like I do.

However, the most recognizable rock song would be [a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhcR1ZS2hVo"]Beethoven's 5th Symphony[/a]

I, like the odd person I am, doesn't like the song.

And no, Smoke on the Water is more "the song" for me
wrong, it doesn't have enough bass in it.

OT: rock can't be defined by a single song, rock is just a genre where everything with lots of guitar and bass is chucked into.

The most recogizable melody is probably Shave and a Haircut. But if we're talking rock music, I'd say Smoke on the Water.

I always thought the most recognizable rock song was Hey Jude, followed closely by Smoke On The Water, but Bohemian Rhapsody is definately up there.

Personally, I think "We Will Rock You" is a whole lot more recognizable than "Bohemian Rhapsody."
